Job description

Role: Accounting Manager
Date Listed: September 10, 2026
Team: Finance / Accounting
Reports To: Head of Finance
Target Start Date: October 1, 2026
Location: Denver, CO (Hybrid)
Role Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Compensation: $95,000–$120,000/year

About Us

For roughly 500,000 years, humans have been burning stuff to heat our homes, burning stuff to light our homes, and burning stuff to power our machines. It's 2026, people. Let's change that.

Right now, homes account for roughly 20% of the world's carbon emissions. Here at Elephant Energy, we know that there is a better way. As a certified B Corp, we are committed to building a one-stop shop that makes it easy to upgrade to a climate-friendly home. We enable homeowners to confidently make the switch to modern, electric technologies and get their homes off of fossil fuels — all at once, or over time.

About The Role

What you would be doing: We are excited to add an Accounting Manager to our team! Reporting to the Head of Finance, the Accounting Manager will be responsible for overseeing the company’s day-to-day accounting operations and monthly close process. We're looking for someone with public accounting experience, who has worked at a Series A–C startup and has a background in climate/energy/utilities.

This position requires in-person work in Denver, Colorado. We are a Hybrid company with Herdquarters in Broomfield, CO and get together as a team semi-annually in Colorado

The Problem This Role Solves

Elephant Energy's accounting is handled by an external provider, and the Head of Finance is the only internal finance employee — so day-to-day bookkeeping (AP, payroll, and other transactional work) pulls him away from strategic finance. Bringing accounting in-house fixes this: it frees the Head of Finance to focus on strategy, while giving Elephant Energy tighter control, faster close, and closer integration with the rest of the company.

Big Things
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process end-to-end, closing the books by the 15th of each month.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze journal entries, financial statements, and supporting schedules to ensure accuracy and GAAP compliance.
  • Manage general ledger accounting and maintain the integrity of the chart of accounts.
  • Build Elephant Energy's in-house accounting function from the ground up — processes, controls, and documentation — as the company internalizes work previously handled externally.
  • Recommend and lead a detailed overhaul of existing accounting processes and internal controls.
  • Own the day-to-day accounting tech stack (QuickBooks, Ramp) and identify opportunities to automate reporting and reconciliation using AI tools (e.g., Claude, Coefficient).
  • Prepare audit-ready financials and manage the year-end audit process, including managing auditor requests.
  • Take ownership of day-to-day activities (e.g. AP and payroll processing) from the Head of Finance.
  • Partner cross-functionally with other internal teams to improve financial visibility and communication across the business.
  • As the accounting function grows, build toward leading and developing an internal accounting team.
What the Role Does Not Do
  • Does not set overall finance or capital strategy — that stays with the Head of Finance.
  • Does not manage a team at hire — this is an individual-contributor role initially, with people leadership expected to develop as the accounting function scales.
  • Does not set payroll policy or benefits plan design (owned by People Ops/Head of Finance) — owns the operational processing of payroll, not the underlying policy.
  • Does not own FP&A / forward-looking financial modeling or capital strategy — those stay with the Head of Finance, freed up by this role to focus on them.
Little Things
  • Prepare and post journal entries and month-end accruals.
  • Reconcile bank, credit card (Ramp), and balance sheet accounts.
  • Manage day-to-day accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
  • Code and review expenses (COGS and opex) accurately across markets and departments.
  • Prepare supporting schedules and organize audit workpapers.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot the QuickBooks/Ramp integration and related workflows.
  • Use AI tools (Claude, Coefficient) to streamline recurring reporting and reconciliation tasks.
  • Respond to ad hoc financial data requests from the Head of Finance and cross-functional teams.
Success Metrics — Measurable Impact

Success is defined by measurable impact against the problem this role solves, not general helpfulness:

  • Monthly close consistently completed by the 15th of the following month.
  • Audit-ready financials delivered by end of year, supporting a clean, unqualified audit opinion.
  • Full internal ownership of day-to-day accounting operations
  • Demonstrated improvement in cross-functional financial visibility, validated through feedback from Sales Ops, People Ops, and leadership.
Why This Role Exists
  • A dedicated Accounting Manager enables closer, faster communication with People Ops, Sales Ops, and other internal teams that depend on timely financial data.
  • To increase our internal accounting capabilities to (1) free up Head of Finance to work on more strategic finance initiatives and (2) provide additional support to our external accounting partners.
  • In-house ownership shortens the feedback loop between financial data and business decisions.
  • Additional accounting capacity reduces risk and improves audit readiness ahead of future growth.
  • This role builds the foundation for a scalable internal accounting function, including future team growth as Elephant Energy expands.
Ideal Candidate Profile

In order to guide hiring and screening, we are seeking:

  • 2–4 years of public accounting experience.
  • 1–2 years of experience at a venture-backed startup.
  • Big plus: experience in the energy industry, especially with utility rebate programs.
  • CPA (or actively pursuing) preferred, not required.
  • Hands-on experience with QuickBooks and Ramp, or comparable GL and spend-management tools.
  • Comfort using AI tools (e.g., Claude, Coefficient) to streamline accounting workflows.
  • Advanced Excel / Google Sheets skills.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and month-end close processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and build processes in an ambiguous, fast-moving environment.
  • Painstaking attention to detail and written/verbal communication across all levels of the organization.
