Badger Meter Inc. in Milwaukee, WI, is seeking an Accountant – Indirect Tax to manage day-to-day sales and use tax, ensure compliance, and file returns. You will serve as the primary Avalara administrator and work cross-functionally to ensure correct tax treatment on quotes and invoices.

The role requires 2–3 years of accounting or indirect tax experience, strong Excel skills, and the ability to collaborate across departments to optimize tax processes within the Badger Meter compliance framework.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 2–3 years accounting or tax experience, including indirect tax experience preferred.
• Proficiency with Excel and ability to learn new software applications.

Responsibilities

• Perform monthly journal entries and reconciliations of indirect tax GL accounts.
• Prepare and file monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across multiple states.
• Maintain customer sales tax exemption certificates and related documentation.
• Administer Avalara and optimize software for accurate tax determination and compliance.
• Assist with sales tax audits and respond to information requests.
• Collaborate with Credit and Sales to investigate and correct tax issues.
• Review and process credit memos to resolve sales tax issues.
• Monitor notices from tax jurisdictions and respond as needed.

What You Will Contribute: Job Summary & Responsibilities

As a member of the accounting team, the Accountant – Indirect Tax manages the day-to-day sales and use tax and other indirect tax functions ensuring compliance and timely filing of returns and appropriate tax treatment of transactions. This role serves as the primary administrator of the sales tax software, Avalara and works cross functionally with other departments to ensure tax is applied correctly on customer quotes and invoices.

Responsibilities include:

• Perform monthly journal entries and reconciliations of indirect tax general ledger accounts and resolve any variances.
• Prepare and file monthly, quarterly and annual sales and use tax returns across multiple states and jurisdictions.
• Maintain and monitor customer sales tax exemption certificates and related documentation to support appropriate tax treatment and audit readiness.
• Serve as the administrator for Avalara, maintaining and optimizing the software to support accurate tax determination and ongoing compliance.
• Assist with sales and use tax audits, including gathering documentation and responding to information requests.
• Manage the internal tax email address timely responding to messages.
• Work cross functionally with Credit and Sales to investigate and correct sales tax errors to ensure accurate tax calculation and reporting.
• Review and process credit memos to resolve customer sales tax issues.
• Monitor, respond to, and assist in resolving notices and correspondence from tax jurisdictions.
• When necessary, research indirect tax issues and identify applicable tax authorities, regulations, and guidance, summarize findings and propose solutions for review with management and external tax advisors, as appropriate.
• Collaborate with Accounting, Accounts Payable, Credit, Customer Care and Procurement to ensure proper tax classification and treatment of transactions and identify opportunities for process improvements.
• Support and coordinate sales tax onboarding activities for newly acquired companies aligning processes to the Badger Meter compliance framework.
• Additional responsibilities as assigned to support accounting functions and adapt to evolving business needs.

Qualifications & Skills

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• Two to three years of accounting or tax experience, including at least one year of sales and use tax or other indirect tax experience, preferred.
• Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically excel, and the ability to learn and effectively use new software applications and technology
• Proficiency with ERP systems and tax automation software is preferred
• Strong attention to detail
• Excellent organizational, time management, written, and verbal communication skills
• Self-motivated and capable of working independently
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
• Demonstrated adaptability and willingness to embrace change to support business needs
