Job summary

City Utilities of Springfield seeks an intern to assist in budgeting and financial analysis. Under the direction of the Financial Analyst, you will help prepare the Annual Operating Budget and Operating Plan, collect data, perform reconciliations, and support monthly reporting.

This internship is 20–25 hours weekly during the school year and up to 40 hours in summer, with eligibility requirements for full-time student status and a graduation window. Position is on-site in Missouri.

Qualifications

  • Accounting or business-related major required.
  • One year of college with accounting courses preferred.
  • Experience with Excel macros and BI tools is a plus.

This position requires an employee to work between 20-25 hours per week during the school semesters, and 40 hours per week during summer, not to exceed 1,500 hours in a calendar year. Each semester, undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and graduate students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours.

INTERN GUIDELINES: Students who have completed at least one year of college and are enrolled as a full-time student may apply. Must be enrolled full-time in a degree seeking program. A student’s intern position will end within three months after graduation.

Pay Details: $17.00 - $20.00/hour *Depends upon classification

Work Schedule: Between the hours of Monday to Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm, 20-25 hours per week.

Job Description: PURPOSE OF POSITION: Under the direction of the Financial Analyst or designee, assists in the preparation of the Annual Operating Budget and Operating Plan. Assists in data collection and analysis. Prepares monthly reconciliations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Assists in the maintenance of Operating Plan reporting layouts and standard reports.
  2. Assists in the maintenance of project management reporting system in PeopleSoft, including responsibility for project setup and maintenance, preparation and maintenance of the project reporting layouts, distribution of reports to project managers, and reconciliations to the general ledger.
  3. Develops monthly budgeted financial statements and updates these to be reflective of approved transfers. Prepares budgeted financial data for all accounting reports and generates computer files for various system generated reports. Responsible for maintaining monthly budget reporting layouts.
  4. Supports data collection and analysis for Forecasting material used to advise the determination of financial solutions for the Annual Operation Plan.
  5. Provides support for the preparation of the Annual Operating Budget and Operating Plan. Assists in preparing Budget and Operating Plan presentations and supplemental materials.
  6. Analyzes monthly financial statements for deviations from budget and presents results to supervisor.
  7. Actively supports all Finance goals, processes, and standards.
  8. Performs other related duties as required or assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Accounting, Computer Information System, Economics, or Business-related major is required from an accredited college or university. Minimum of one year of college that includes at least six hours of accounting related courses. Six months of recent progressively responsible accounting or general office work preferred. Experience with Excel macros and/or Business Intelligence software is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • A working knowledge of office procedures, practices, and equipment.
  • Must be able to maintain amicable working relationships with personnel at all levels.
  • Ability to effectively utilize a range of digital tools and platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, enterprise software, artificial intelligence-enhanced applications, and self-service systems. Must possess a willingness and capacity to learn and adapt to emerging technologies, including mobile devices, cloud-based systems, and data-driven platforms relevant to utility operations.
  • Maintain adherence to all company policies.
Physical Requirements

Typically, sedentary work. Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and receive detailed information through oral communication. Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and close visual acuity to operate a computer is required.

Working Conditions

Normal office environment.

Miscellaneous Requirements
  • New hires are informed of the requirements of the Internship Program upon hire, and incumbents must continue to meet the requirements each semester in order to continue employment. Interns who do not meet the requirements may be ineligible for the internship and their employment may be terminated.
  • Employee must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.
  • Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people. TESTING Testing may be required.
