Job summary

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) seeks a professional accountant to perform complex accounting tasks and provide supervision to staff when needed. The role includes auditing financial records, travel and business processes, and collaborating with County auditors.

The position requires a Bachelor's in Accounting/Finance and at least one year of professional accounting experience, with a valid Arizona driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or closely related field.
  • One (1) year of professional level accounting experience.
  • Combined Education And Experience Qualifications may substitute for minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license or have the ability to obtain by hire.
  • Training that may be provided on‑the‑job: FEMA NIMS – IS100 and 700; Safety; Payroll; PREA.
  • Background review required prior to hiring.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare travel files for all incoming approved requests and follow through to completion.
  • Book all travel arrangements (i.e. car, hotel, airline, registration).
  • Coordinate with travelers on arrangements.
  • Prepare Post and Pre‑Travel Per Diem from payroll processing.
  • Prepare monthly P‑Card allocation and report.
  • Back‑up Extradition Per Diem processing.
  • Prepare various reports on a weekly, monthly, and year‑end basis; and as requested.
  • Coordinate and provide requested documentation for County and/or State auditors, OMB, and media requests.
  • Participate in special projects as assigned; ensure compliance between MCSO and County systems.

Essential Job Tasks
  • Prepare travel files for all incoming approved requests and follow through to completion.

  • Participate and complete any special project assigned the Bureau, Division Commander or supervisor.
  • Ensure compliance between MCSO and the County regarding Human Resources and Financial Systems applications and processes.
  • Interpret rules in accordance with laws, regulations, policies and current practices.
  • May coordinate and supervise resources to ensure all assigned tasks are accurate and completed on time
  • Utilize multiple information systems to access financial information.
  • Maintain ledgers, registers, records of initial entry and control accounts.
  • Prepare, implement and validate journal vouchers.
  • Perform various reconciliation analysis
  • Review others work for accuracy.
  • Initiate resolution and reporting of discrepancies involving financial transactions.
  • Assist in financial audits, compliance reviews.
  • Act as liaison between Sheriff’s Finance and County departments
  • Represent MCSO Financial Bureau at meetings regarding activities and/or functions related to assigned unit.
  • Evaluate, recommend and implement job process improvements.
  • Effectively converse both verbal and written communication with peers and external contacts
  • Provide information regarding departmental policies and procedures
  • Assist other team members as needed
  • Problem solving and initiative in resolving issues
  • Ensure all required reporting (financial and other) associated with MCSO financial activity is completed in a timely manner
  • Take initiative for investigating discrepancies, provide recommendations based on sound accounting practices and apply resolution as appropriate.
  • Discuss items with supervisor ensuring consistency in application.
  • Be present at work site to perform assigned tasks at the times and dates scheduled and/or assigned by the Supervisor.
