Job summary

San Francisco Public Transportation Agency is seeking an experienced Accountant to support financial operations for a public transportation organization in San Francisco. This onsite role requires full-cycle accounting expertise and a solid understanding of governmental accounting.

The successful candidate will manage journal entries, GL reconciliations, and monthly financial reporting while ensuring compliance with GAAP, GASB, and government regulations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (or related field).
• At least four years of progressively responsible full-cycle accounting or auditing experience.
• Experience with a public transportation organization, government agency, or public-sector environment preferred.
• Strong knowledge of governmental accounting, GAAP, GASB standards, and accounting cycles.
• CPA licensure process desirable.
• Strong analytical, reconciliation, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate accounting records across administrative, development, and operational divisions.
• Prepare and post recurring and non-recurring journal entries, including accruals, allocations, cash activity, capital assets, debt service, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.
• Reconcile general ledger and subsidiary accounts and resolve discrepancies involving invoices, purchase orders, encumbrances, and retention.
• Review activity across accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, inventory, and capital assets.
• Prepare monthly financial reports and assist with financial statement production.
• Support financial, compliance, and performance audits.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, GASB standards, government regulations, and internal financial policies.
• Maintain accounting procedures, workflows, and supporting documentation.
• Communicate accounting processes clearly to staff, auditors, and outside agencies.
• Stay current on governmental accounting standards and reporting requirements.

• Experience with a public transportation organization, government agency, or other public-sector environment is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of governmental accounting, GAAP, GASB standards, and accounting cycles.
• Participation in the CPA licensure process is desirable.
• Strong analytical, reconciliation, communication, and problem-solving skills.
