Responsibilities

  • Provide first-line setup and troubleshooting for assistive technologies.

  • Correct accessibility issues in documents and digital materials.
  • Provide support to proctoring and general accommodation tasks.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Accessibility Services Coordinator is part of the Student Access Office at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for coordinating captioning, CART, and other technology services and solutions for students with disabilities. Students with disabilities connect with Student Access each semester to receive any necessary accommodations; the Accessibility Services Coordinator works with those students and other campus stakeholders to create an accessible educational environment. Reporting directly to the Assistive Technology (AT) Specialist, the Accessibility Services Coordinator will collaborate with all Student Access team members to aid in reducing barriers across campus.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:
  • Produce and convert accessible course materials (Word, PDF, HTML, EPUB, Braille, and tactile graphics) to meet student accommodation needs.
  • Prepare accessible exams and assessments in advance, ensuring correct structure, reading order, and compatibility with assistive technologies.
  • Locate, request, and manage accessible textbooks and publisher files, including verifying student purchase when required.
  • Coordinate captioning, CART, and media-access services for courses and events, ensuring timely delivery and quality.
  • Provide first-line setup and troubleshooting for assistive technologies used by students, escalating complex issues to the AT Specialist.
  • Track and manage accommodations-related technology, including hearing, vision, motor, and notetaking devices.
  • Coordinate notetaking accommodations, including matching requests, recruiting volunteers, and communicating with faculty.
  • Collaborate with instructors and students to obtain materials, clarify formatting needs, and support effective use of alternative formats and AT.
  • Correct accessibility issues in documents and digital materials used by students with alternative format accommodations.
  • Provide support to core student access functions such as proctoring, general email response, and accommodation support.
  • Coordinate with the Office Manager and Director of Administration to assure accurate data collection, curation, and reporting.
  • Undertake any other responsibilities as needed.
Supervisory Relationships:

The Accessibility Services Coordinator will report to the Assistive Technology Specialist. The Accessibility Services Coordinator will not supervise other staff.

Education and Certifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate's Degree or three years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in technology domain or related field.
Experience and Skills:
  • Has a portfolio of technology-related products and projects.
  • Has a demonstrated ability to produce accessible digital documents.
  • Has a demonstrated working knowledge of assistive technologies such as computer voice synthesis, electronic text systems, digital voice recording devices, audio books, CCTV, adaptive devices, braille equipment, networked printers and high-speed scanners, note taking software, and the theories, principles, and practices guiding their use.
  • Has knowledge and understanding of the civil rights laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, the ADAA and other applicable laws, and their application at the post-secondary level.
  • Has experience working with individuals with disabilities in identification of AT that provide access to environmental barriers.
  • Has experience in Information Technology, customer service, and working with diverse populations.
  • Is skilled in organization, presentation, and verbal and written communication.
  • History of documenting processes and workflows.
  • Familiarity with video and audio recording.
  • Demonstrates ability to correct basic accessibility errors in webpages and/or documents.
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language and/or Braille.
  • Familiarity with math languages, such as LaTeX and MathML and musical notation.
