Job summary

Qualifications

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Accessibility Services Advisor will assist the Coordinator of Accessibility Services in determining and providing reasonable and appropriate accommodations for registered students with disabilities. The Accessibility Services Advisor will provide academic coaching for incoming first-year students with disabilities and, as needed, with other students who are identified as at-risk.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Analyze documentation to determine reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities registered with Accessibility Services.
• Coordinate the provision of accommodations for registered students with disabilities; examples include testing accommodations, notetaking assistance, alternate format of print materials, and disability-related housing requests.
• Provide information about disability-related services to prospective and current students, parents, faculty, and others.
• Serve as a liaison between faculty and students with disabilities.
• Assist the Coordinator of Accessibility Services in developing new and/or updating policies and procedures that address the emerging needs of students with disabilities.
• Assist the Coordinator of Accessibility Services in completing outcomes assessment work.
• Provide direct support to students with disabilities as well as some at-risk students participating in the Academic Coaching Program (fall) and the Academic Success Program (spring), assisting them in managing their academic transition to college or improving their academic performance, developing study skills/behaviors, and utilizing a variety of university resources, as needed, to maximize their academic success.
• Maintain confidentiality of information (including but not limited to: student and employee personal information, student grades, etc.), both during and after employment with the University. Any question regarding the confidentiality of material should be referred to the supervisor. Any violation shall subject the employee to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

% of Time

60% Coordinate the provision of various academic accommodations for registered students with disabilities.

20% Provide academic coaching to first-year students with disabilities and, as needed, to other students who are identified as at-risk; monitor the academic progress of students and maintain appropriate records of the support provided.

10% Determine and develop new and/or updated policies and procedures which address the emerging needs of students with disabilities and assist with the development of written and online information for students with disabilities at Niagara University.

10% Provide information on disability-related support and services to prospective and current students, parents, faculty, and others as requested; serve as a liaison between students with disabilities and faculty, staff, and other university personnel.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

1. Knowledge of disability-related laws and provision of accommodations for students with disabilities.
2. Ability to read and interpret psychological evaluations as well as other disability-related documentation to determine appropriate accommodations.
3. Experience working with students on the autism spectrum and students with mental health conditions / diagnoses.
4. Knowledge of intervention techniques for at-risk college students, specifically students with disabilities.
5. Excellent oral, written, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
6. Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff and administrators.
7. Ability to interpret high school transcripts and various student data related to at-risk students.
8. Proficiency with Google Suite.
9. Availability to work nontraditional business hours as needed.

ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS

The functions of the position are usually performed sitting, but may require some amount of time standing. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying, and other movements may be required. Tasks involve working on a computer keyboard and using computer software applications and a calculator that involve extensive wrist and hand movements. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others.
