Job summary

The University of Houston is seeking a skilled Access Control Technician to assess operational needs and support the Access Control System across campus. The role includes installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and coordination of access control hardware and software, with a focus on security and reliability.

Requires a High School Diploma or GED, at least three years of related experience, and Lenel Certification within a year.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; education verification will be conducted.
  • Minimum of three years of directly job-related experience; Lenel Software experience preferred.
  • Must obtain Lenel Core Certification within one year of hire.
  • Security-sensitive position; criminal history check required.
  • Education in lieu of experience accepted.

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair and modify access control board readers, electric locks and related devices.
  • Perform basic programming of system hardware.
  • Verify interface and integration with other security systems.
  • Oversee maintenance and replacement of tools and peripherals.
  • Process service orders and coordinate campus-wide access work.
  • Conduct quality control on third-party access control installations.
  • Monitor alarms, classify alarm types, and reduce false positives.
  • Notify relevant parties of alarms and maintain system data.
  • Assist campus Access Users with troubleshooting and issue resolution.
  • Create and assign user rights in the Electronic Access Control Software.
  • Report defects in door peripherals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Description

Assesses operational needs regarding the Access Control System. Monitors and maintains access control hardware and assists the campus with troubleshooting, repair and hardware problems. Pursuant to the State of Texas Executive Order No. GA-48, this position researches, works on, or has access to critical infrastructure and requires the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the University infrastructure. This position requires personnel be routinely reviewed to determine whether or not criminal history or continuous connections for the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary might prevent the employee from being able to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure.

  • Installs, repairs and makes modifications on a variety of access control board card readers, electric locks and other supportive devices.
  • Basic programming of system hardware.
  • Verifies field hardware interface and integration with other security systems.
  • Oversees the maintenance and replacement of tools and various peripheral devices including exit device requests, contacts and door locking hardware.
  • Reviews service order requests and coordinates work to be performed with customers on campus.
  • Conducts Quality Control on all Third-Party installation of access control devices.
  • Monitors and processes alarms from the access control system, by distinguishing alarm types associated with hardware alarms and response alarms.
  • Verifies alarms are being generated based on ranking of alarms as well as decreasing false positives.
  • Notify appropriate parties of all alarms.
  • Regularly updates and maintains Access Control System information into computer database.
  • Receives incoming phone calls from campus Department Access Users and assists with troubleshooting.
  • Creates and assigns user rights and permissions to access the Electronic Access Control Software.
  • Verify door peripherals are working correctly and report any defects to Access Control Facilities Department.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

High School Diploma Or GED Required

Department is willing to accept education in lieu of experience.

MQ: Requires a basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and simple mathematical functions like percentages, ratios, etc. as might normally be acquired through attainment of a high school diploma or GED. Education verification will be conducted upon acceptance of an employment offer.

Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related experience. Experience with Lenel Software and Access Control Installation strongly preferred. Certification/Licensing: Requires technical certification or licensing directly related to the job. Must be able to obtain Lenel Core Certification within a year from hire.
