Job summary

Position Information

Facilities Services is recruiting for multiple Access Control Mechanic positions. The full salary range for the Access Control Mechanic position is $45.07 - $50.75 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. Reporting to the Access Control & Fire Life and Safety Supervisor in the Facilities Services Maintenance Department, the Access Control Mechanic performs journey-level access control and locksmith services throughout the University of California, Riverside campus community. The Access Control Mechanic is responsible for installing, programming, troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, inspecting, and monitoring various access systems and stand-alone networks. Provides security and access control support, including procedures for buildings, safes, and operational closures. Additionally, the Access Control Mechanic coordinates and communicates with campus customers to understand their needs and fulfill work order requests. Access control services may be performed indoors and outdoors throughout the campus. This position works closely and coordinates with other skilled trades in preparing the campus' new builds for launch and occupancy. The Access Control Mechanic is relied upon to respond to emergencies after hours, on weekends, and holidays. This job posting is for 2 openings on a 4/10 work schedule (4 days per week, 5:30am to 4:00pm, with a one half hour lunch). Experience Requirements

4 years of journey-level experience in one or more of the trades involving access control or locksmithing, and/or completion of a certified apprenticeship training; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Experience with repair and troubleshooting electrical circuits with voltages up to 120 volts.

Experience operating shop equipment and tools common to the skilled trade.

Experience and ability to prioritize work orders, routine work, emergency requests and ability to choose the proper materials or equipment to accomplish work in the most expeditious and safe manner.

Experience working with a diverse student, staff, faculty and visitor population and ability to provide exemplary customer service.

Experience to review and create blueprints/drawings, and specifications for new construction and retrofit/renovation projects according to building code requirements.

Experience to install, replace, repair, troubleshoot and maintain surveillance equipment such as IP cameras, analog cameras, and DVRs.

Minimum Requirements

• Ability and willingness to work weekends and holidays, occasional scheduled and unscheduled overtime, emergency call-back, and a flexible schedule as needed.


• Ability to install, modify, repair and replace mechanical and electronic locking systems.


• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.


• Knowledge and ability to install, modify, repair and replace a variety of networked access systems and stand-alone access systems.


• Knowledge and ability to program, troubleshoot and operate different types of access control systems and software with ability to repair and/or correct connectivity and operational issues.


• Ability to monitor and maintain surveillance systems and DVR systems to ensure proper functionality and recording with ability to pull video footage.


• Knowledge of ADA/Auto doors and related hardware. Ability to repair and/or replace mechanical door closers. Working knowledge of code requirements relating to building access and egress control devices.


• Ability to create and maintain interchangeable cores and multi-level master key systems and cut keys; ability to re-core locks.


• Skill in using and maintaining of electrical and mechanical tools, test equipment, key cutting equipment, materials, and locksmithing hardware (electronic and mechanical).


• Ability to effectively communicate and understand safety regulations and hazards.


• Knowledge of safe and proper procedures when hazardous materials are suspected.


• Ability to estimate time, methods and materials needed from construction documents. Ability to read and understanding documents such as complex technical procedures, work instructions, blue prints, plans, manuals, specifications, and diagrams.


• Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations.


• Ability to communicate and work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public, and provide exceptional customer service.


• Ability to work with a diverse student, staff, faculty and visitor population and provide excellent customer service.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of safes with dial and electronic locks.


• Knowledge of UC/UCR policies and systems.


• Basic knowledge and technical skills with computer programs and applications (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Design Cad 2, etc.).


• Ability to prioritize work orders, routing work, emergency requests and ability to choose the proper materials or equipment to accomplish work in the most expeditious and safe manner.
