Job summary

Management & Training Corporation (MTC) at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility in Meridian, MS, seeks an educator to provide academic instruction to inmates under approved curricula and MDOC directives. You will lead ABE/GED, life skills, health education, and other classes while adapting to inmate needs.

Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree or higher in education, MD certification, and MS driving eligibility.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in education or related field required.
• Standard certification and licensure from the Mississippi Department of Education.
• One year related experience preferred.
• Valid driver’s license in Mississippi with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.

Responsibilities

• Plan and conduct classes for inmates in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Education Development (GED) programs.
• Develop and implement life skills, cultural awareness, health education, and other curricula tailored to class capabilities.
• Utilize audio/visual teaching materials customized to inmate needs.
• Administer and interpret education tests to guide instruction.
• Collaborate with staff to improve educational programs and services.
• Counsel inmates on academic progress and problem-solving.
• Coordinate with school districts or other parties to align programs.
• Develop and maintain educational materials for classes.
• Adjust curriculum to individual differences among inmates.
• Assess outcomes of classes and engage with instructors accordingly.
• Perform other duties as assigned within capabilities.

Position Summary

Reports to the education administrator or senior instructor. Responsible for providing academic instruction to inmates in accordance with approved curricula, in compliance with Management & Training Corporation (MTC), and Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) directives.

Essential Functions

• Plan and conduct classes for inmates in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Education Development (GED), life sills, cultural awareness, health education and special curriculum and other subjects selected to correspond with the ability and limitations of the class.
• Prepare special teaching plans, courses, and activities and learning experiences appropriate for the specific inmates assigned.
• Utilize appropriate audio and visual teaching materials individualized to the specific need of the inmate.
• Administer individual educational tests and learning aptitude tests and use the results for prescriptive instruction.
• Participate in staff conferences to develop and improve educational programs.
• Counsel and advise inmates on academic problems.
• Coordinate activities and classes in conjunction with appropriate school districts or other involved parties.
• Develop program and related educational materials as necessary for the establishment and maintenance of assigned classes.
• Adjust material and curriculum to the individual differences of the inmates assigned.
• Confer with inmates and instructors to evaluate results of conducted classes.
• Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed.
• Maintain accountability of staff, inmates and property; adhere to safety practices.

It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.

Education And Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or higher in education or related field required. Standard certification and licensure from the Mississippi Department of Education and one (1) year related experience preferred. Valid driver’s license in the state of Mississippi with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.

Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements.
