Job summary

Chapman University students will tutor in the Higher Ground after-school program in Anaheim, CA, providing homework help, academic enrichment, and mentoring.

Provide small-group tutoring (2–3 students) in reading, writing, and math, using structured lesson plans and tracking progress with a flexible schedule within the 2:00 PM–5:00 PM window.

Qualifications

• Must be Chapman University student with a Federal Work-Study award.
• Strong foundation in reading, writing, or math; education, English, or STEM-related major is a plus.
• Comfortable explaining and re-teaching concepts to small groups of youth.
• Patient, encouraging, and able to adapt instruction to each student’s pace.
• Must have reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

• Lead small-group tutoring sessions (2 to 3 students) in reading, writing, and/or math, matched to each student’s grade level and needs.
• Reinforce concepts and skills from students’ current schoolwork and assigned homework.
• Use grade-appropriate materials and a structured lesson plan for each subject area.
• Track individual student progress across sessions and flag ongoing academic concerns to program staff.
• Build a patient, encouraging learning environment that supports academic confidence.
• Communicate consistently with the site supervisor on grouping and scheduling of students.

About the Program

Higher Ground Youth and Family Services provides after-school programming for elementary and secondary students in Anaheim, California. Many of the students served come from under-resourced communities and benefit from individualized academic support that supplements their school-day learning. Through this partnership, Chapman University students will be placed as tutors within the after-school program to provide homework help, academic enrichment, and mentoring. The program aims to improve academic outcomes for K-12 students while providing Chapman undergraduates with valuable pre-professional experience in education and youth development.

Position Summary

Provide small-group academic tutoring, 2 to 3 students at a time, in reading, writing, and math, reinforcing school-day learning and building academic confidence and skill. This position supports community residents by helping maintain welcoming spaces and strengthen programs that respond to community needs. Through this work, the role will help ensure that essential services and resources are accessible and contribute to residents’ quality of life.

• Patient, encouraging, and able to adapt instruction to each student’s pace.
• Must have reliable source of transportation.

Program Hours Monday through Friday, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM (after-school program hours). Scheduling is flexible within this window — partial availability (for example, 2 to 3 days per week) is welcome; students do not need to cover all five days.

Desired Qualifications

• Spanish language proficiency — bilingual Spanish/English tutors are highly needed to serve the Anaheim community.
• Strong math skills — math tutors are in particularly high demand across grade levels.
• Education major, minor, or coursework in education, child development, psychology, social work, or related fields.
• Prior experience tutoring, mentoring, teaching, or working with children or adolescents.
• Experience working with diverse populations including English language learners.
• Experience or coursework in culturally responsive teaching or equity in education.
• CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
• Knowledge of elementary or secondary school curriculum and standards.
