Job summary

General Information:

Student Academic Success (SAS) seeks a detail-oriented student writer to research and write stories for the unit’s academic success magazine and online newsletter. Get paid to tell great stories. Interview students, alumni, donors, faculty, and staff while gaining real-world experience and building a strong writing portfolio.

The Academic Success Communications Content Assistant must be available to work 10 hours per week.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Research, write, and edit engaging academic success stories for print and digital publications.
• Conduct interviews with students, alumni, donors, faculty, and staff.
• Work with the Student Academic Success Communications team to create story timelines that ensure content deadlines are met.
• Collaborate with the Student Academic Success Communications team and Student Academic Success units on edits and feedback.
• Work both collaboratively and independently, and meet project deadlines.
• Get trained and build articles in Cascade (JMU web management system).

Qualifications:

• Current degree-seeking student, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (at least 6 credit hours)
• Strong writing and editing skills
• Ability to conduct oneself professionally when interacting with interview subjects.
• Detail-oriented with good time management and prioritization skills
• Working knowledge or interest in journalism, marketing, public relations, or storytelling
• Knowledge or experience in the following is helpful, but not required: web-based management system, Microsoft Office
• Skills in graphic design, videography, and/or photography are a plus

Conditions of Employment:

Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
