Job Summary

Provides comprehensive, advanced academic advising to undergraduate and graduate students for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. In collaboration with the two principal program coordinators (undergraduate and graduate) and respective faculty advisors, administers varied, complex programmatic activities in the undergraduate and graduate programs. Act as an integral member of the CEE advising team and works collaboratively with the COE Undergraduate Office (EUO) and Graduate Studies. Responsible for the complexities of administering the CEE academic programs, including but not limited to relevant department and university policies, procedures & resources, undergraduate course articulations with other colleges/universities, ABET requirements and COE requirements. Primary responsibilities in providing expert advising and counseling, academic program management and curriculum support, admissions and academic services, and student outreach, recruitment and engagement.

Reports directly to the CEE Student Services Manager and indirectly reports to the Director for Undergraduate Programs and Advising, COE Undergraduate Office, in the areas of professional development, advising resources, college-wide outreach, recruitment and retention programs, and best practices.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
  • Bachelor's degree in related area; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience/training
  • Experience in holistic advising and counseling undergraduate and graduate students in a university setting while maintaining confidentiality of student records and applying FERPA.
  • Skills to identify and determine appropriate level of advising or referral services needed for individual students in a wide variety of situations.
  • Management and organizational skills, including skills to prioritize work and meet critical deadlines, and to manage multiple tasks with concurrent and conflicting priorities, while
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to effectively advise, facilitate meetings, deliver presentations, and build trusting relationships with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
  • Skill in working independently, quickly and accurately and with close attention to detail under general direction.
  • Computer skills using software programs (i.e. Microsoft Word and Excel) for word processing, maintaining databases, and accessing student information.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in interpreting and applying complex university policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of general university, GE, college and major requirements, academic courses/programs/curriculum, educational alternatives, petitions and certifications, etc.
  • Skill to prepare official major certifications, develop student academic plans, and guide/track students through academic planning.
  • Organizational and administrative skills to develop and implement new programs, materials and/or procedures to better meet the undergraduate/graduate advising needs of the department.

Department Overview

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) is a large and diverse academic department in the college with approximately 800 undergraduates in the undergraduate majors and approximately 150 graduate students enrolled in Master's or Ph.D. degree programs. We offer two BS majors in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering, with 5 areas of specialization: Water Resources, Environmental, Geotechnical, Transportation and Structural Engineering. Two minors are offered: Construction Engineering and Management, and Sustainability in the Built Environment. The department has 39 faculty 3 adjunct professors, 4 professional research engineers, 25 Professional Scientists and Technical staff, and 11 administrative staff.
