Job summary

The Salvation Army Seattle White Center Corps is seeking an Academic Mentor to help develop and implement relational programs for children, youth, and families. You will tutor students from Kindergarten through High School and assist with curriculum planning and enrichment activities.

Schedule is Monday–Friday with occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays. A High School diploma or GED is required, and you must be able to read and write clearly in English, lift up to 50 pounds, and pass

  • Establish and maintain relationships with children, youth, and families; communicate with staff.
  • Plan family events and maintain records for volunteers as needed.

GENERAL STATEMENT:

Function of Position

As an Academic Mentor, you will work to assist with developing and implementing relational programs for children, youth, and their families. Work to prepare vibrant, academically strong, and socially skilled students who are ready to flourish in life.

Some duties include but are not limited to tutoring youth in grades Kindergarten through High School in various subjects, monitoring daily homework assignments, monitoring daily reading assignments, developing programs, and planning curriculum.

Schedule

Monday – Friday with occasional evenings, weekends, holidays. Hours are subject to change during the summer.

Education & Experience
  • A High School diploma or GED completion is required
  • Ability to read and write clearly in English
  • Working with children in an educational environment
  • Knowledgeable of basic math, reading, and writing skills
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Must be able to walk 1 mile to and from our local school for pickups daily.
  • Drive a bus van to pick up students. Maintain a daily transportation log indicating students who are being transported.
  • Build and maintain relationships with children/youth/families.
  • Establish and maintain good communication relationships with Seattle White Center staff.
  • Tutor youth in a variety of subjects including math, science, history, and reading.
  • Assist with snacks, washing dishes, emptying trash, and any other cleanup duties requested by supervisor.
  • Assist in the management of the learning environment, helping to keep noise levels to a minimum and students engaged in the Center’s activities.
  • Plan and implement curriculum and activities as needed.
  • Plan and implement family events.
  • Maintain appropriate records and documentation concerning volunteers as needed.
  • Monitor if children are working on homework and that all homework is complete and correct, consulting with the Education Director regarding students who are not meeting this expectation.
  • Help with clean up.
  • Monitor children in hallways, classrooms, computer lab, and any other spaces where children may be present.
  • Help/lead or assist with youth programs i.e. Troops, music, and any other programs.
  • Assist with Family Nights.
  • Any other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply new information/skills
  • Experience with tutoring multiple age groups
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership abilities
  • Understanding and appreciation of children
  • Possess or obtain within 90 days of hire, a current Red Cross First Aid and CPR certificate card
  • Must complete and adhere to Protecting the Mission requirements and guidelines, including the ability to pass a TSA background check
  • WA State Food Worker’s Card must be attained within one month of employment
  • Willingness to serve a diverse population

Qualifications
  • Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license and be 21 years old.
  • Must pass The Salvation Army’s in‑house driving test and Motor vehicles Records check.
  • Must be willing to continually lift 30 pounds and occasionally 50 pounds.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to drive own and/or assigned TSA vehicles (based on availability).
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push, and pull objects such as files, and file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Ability to operate the telephone.
  • Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer.
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs.
  • Ability to access and produce information from a computer.
  • Ability to understand written information.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Parental Leave: The benefit is 40 hours of Paid Leave for qualifying events. Sick Leave: 12 days of Sick Leave annually accruing from day one, eligible for use after three months’ service time. Paid Vacation: Two weeks annually, accruing from day one, for non‑exempt positions. Four weeks annually, accruing from day one, for exempt positions. Accrued vacation is eligible for use after six months’ service time. Paid Holidays: 13 designated holidays + 1 floating holiday per year.
