POSITION TITLE: Program Assistant

DEPARTMENT: Corps Programs

LOCATION: Anacortes

REPORTS TO: Corps Officers

STATUS: Temporary Full-Time, Non-Exempt

COMPENSATION: $21.22 per hour

This is a temporary assignment with an anticipated end date of November 7th, 2026. The assignment is being filled to provide coverage during an employee leave of absence and may be extended based on operational needs.

SCOPE OF POSITION

The Program Assistant role is a leadership position that provides both program and administrative management functions to support the corps officer in their work and assigned corps programs. This position will lead and assist in various Salvation Army regular and seasonal programs such as, but not limited to: Youth Ministries, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Summer, Camp, etc. The Program Assistant will develop and implement a growing spiritual ministry within the framework of The Salvation Army's programs, policies and practices. The Corps Assistant will provide oversight and support for various programs such as after-school program and TROOPS. The Corps Assistant will also fill in for various positions throughout the corps as needed such as front desk and the Hope Market Food Bank.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plan, prepare, and implement various current/future ministries offered by the Anacortes Corps in coordination with corps officer and other ministry staff/volunteers.
  • Understand, practice, and teach the programs of The Salvation Army.
  • Lead and manage the youth program, provide direct supervision and support as needed. Assist with assigned budgets, as required.
  • Prepare and lead seasonal summer programs.
  • Prepare and lead seasonal holiday programs.
  • Serve as primary driver for Youth and other Corps ministries when appropriate and assigned.
  • Provide program and administrative support to Corps Officer, as directed.
  • Ensure program spaces are kept tidy and organized.
  • Create and maintain relationships with program participants and families.
  • Maintain Salvation Army resources including, but not limited to vehicles, finances, website, social media, and finances per Salvation Army policies.
  • Attend Corps and NW Divisional events as directed.
  • Meet regularly with Corps officer for review and update of ministry needs and goals.
  • Create and maintain program files as needed, including Corps and Divisional electronic filing systems.
  • Maintain and update contact information.
  • Generate reports as needed.
  • Maintain supply inventory and order replacement supplies, as necessary.
  • Prepare general correspondence as requested, including form letters.
  • Perform other responsibilities as requested and directed by Corps officer.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Washington State Driver's License
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate well.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Must be at least 21 years of age, with a valid driver's license
  • Must be able to pass a background check and a Motor Vehicle Record check.
  • Must be an effective communicator, giving and receiving instructions, and collaborating with staff, volunteers, and clients appropriate to the current situation.
  • Ability to work with adults and youth of all ages.
  • Must be able to function without exhibiting behavioral extremes.
  • Ability to delegate and follow up accordingly.

TECHNOLOGY-RELATED SKILLS
  • Microsoft Office Suite Word and Excel required; proficiency with Outlook; PowerPoint, helpful.
  • Proficient with various social media platforms.
  • Working knowledge of integrated database applications and ability to use new software programs with basic training.
DRIVING QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license
  • Must pass The Salvation Army's in-house driving test and Motor Vehicles Records check
  • Must be willing to continually lift 30 pounds and occasionally 50 pounds
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • Ability to drive various TSA vehicles
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to operate telephone.
  • Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. (usually file boxes)
  • Ability to access and produce information from a computer.
  • Ability to understand written information.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work is typically performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomfort associated without noise, dust, dirt and similar. The service providing areas may generate exposure from time to time with bloodborne pathogens or other potential infectious materials.

Health Insurance: Low bi-weekly premiums for employee-only coverage, Kaiser HMO for those residing in a Kaiser service area, Anthem EPO/PPO is available for those residing outside a Kaiser service area. Voluntary +1 and +family coverage at additional cost. Delta Dental DHMO and DPPO dental insurance are offered.

Life and Voluntary Options: An employer-paid life insurance policy covers employees. Voluntary supplemental life, short-term and long-term disability plans are available.

Retirement Plans: Employer-funded Money Purchase Pension Plan (Defined Contribution Plan) 50% vested at five years eligible service time. Plus, an employee-funded voluntary 403(b) option.

Parental Leave: The benefit is 40 hours of Paid Leave for qualifying events.

Sick Leave: 12 days of Sick Leave annually accruing from day one, eligible for use after three months' service time.

Paid Vacation:

Two weeks annually, accruing from day one, for non-exempt positions.
Four weeks annually, accruing from day one, for exempt positions.
Accrued vacation is eligible for use after six months' service time.

Paid Holidays: 13 designated holidays + 1 floating holiday per year
