Job summary

Mountainland Technical College in Payson, UT is seeking an Academic Counselor to support students’ academic and personal well-being through counseling, success planning, and MTSS-driven interventions.

You will collaborate with faculty, families, and staff to promote retention and timely program completion; a Master’s degree in counseling or related field (or active grad enrollment) is preferred. The role emphasizes crisis response, records maintenance, and student advocacy.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in counseling, education, behavioral science, or related field (or enrolled in a grad program).

• Proven notes, progress reports, and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide short-term individual and group counseling addressing academic, emotional, and social challenges and refer for long-term support as needed.
• Develop and monitor Student Success Plans with measurable goals for students not meeting standards.
• Participate in MTSS to identify needs and design interventions.
• Facilitate constructive dialogue to support a positive learning environment.
• Deliver crisis support and interventions, including after-hours availability when necessary.
• Design and deliver classroom lessons/workshops on topics like suicide prevention, study skills, mental health, and time management.
• Advocate for students by connecting them with resources and ensuring their voices are heard.
• Monitor student performance and attendance, initiating interventions to improve retention.
• Ensure compliance with Section 504 and FERPA; maintain regular service reports.

Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Two evenings per week.

Summary

Academic Counselors serve as advocates for students' academic and personal well-being. They address a wide range of concerns, from disability accommodations to academic challenges and mental health crises, to ensure students have the support they need to thrive. Counselors assess students' needs and goals to create tailored support plans, collaborating with faculty, family, and administrators to foster a supportive environment that promotes program completion and personal growth. A central focus of the role is supporting student retention by identifying barriers early, providing proactive outreach, and helping students stay engaged and successful throughout their programs.

What You'll Do

Responsibilities of the Academic Counselor include, but are not limited to:

• Provide short-term individual and group counseling to address students' academic, emotional, and social challenges, ensuring appropriate referrals for long-term support as needed.
• Develop and monitor Student Success Plans with measurable goals for students who do not meet academic standards, offering tailored guidance and support.
• Actively participate in the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) process to identify students in need and design targeted interventions.
• Facilitate conflict resolution by fostering constructive dialogue to support a positive learning environment.
• Provide timely and effective crisis support and interventions, including availability outside regular work hours when necessary.
• Design and deliver classroom lessons and workshops on topics such as suicide prevention, study skills, mental health awareness, and time management.
• Advocate for students by facilitating access to resources, addressing their concerns, and ensuring their voices are heard.
• Monitor student performance and attendance, initiating proactive interventions to enhance retention and success rates while ensuring policy compliance.
• Oversee compliance with Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act by evaluating and organizing appropriate accommodations. Ensure adherence to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
• Maintain regular and accurate reports detailing services provided to students.

We're seeking professionals who are passionate about student support and committed to excellence. Successful candidates will have:

• Education: Master's degree in counseling, education, behavioral science, or a related field; OR active enrollment in a graduate program in one of these areas.
• Communication Skills: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas while demonstrating cultural competence and inclusivity. Experience with public speaking or group facilitation is preferred.
• Documentation & Record-Keeping: Proficiency in maintaining detailed, accurate notes, progress reports, and documentation.
• Interpersonal Strengths: Demonstrate empathy, strong problem-solving abilities, conflict resolution skills, and adaptability in a dynamic environment.
• Collaboration & Teamwork: Prove ability to effectively collaborate and build strong working relationships across diverse stakeholders.
