Job summary

Spartanburg Community College seeks an Academic Advisor/Success Coach to guide students in academic planning, progress, and scheduling. The role includes helping students develop study skills, time management, and self-regulation to promote college success and graduation outcomes.

Collaborating with faculty advisors and department chairs, you will explain policies, assist with academic plans, and monitor progress for retention initiatives while maintaining FERPA-compliant records and supporting

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master’s preferred.
  • 3+ years in academic advising or related student support services.
  • Experience with Colleague Self Service or similar SIS.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic guidance on plans, progress, and class schedules.
  • Collaborate with faculty advisors and chairs on programs and progression.
  • Explain policies and assist in developing academic plans to meet graduation requirements.
  • Maintain advising records in FERPA-compliant manner.
  • Interact with students at least twice per semester and as needed.
  • Inform advisees of deadlines for Add/Drop and other registration milestones.

Job Responsibilities

The Academic Advisor/Success Coach provides educational guidance by working with students concerning their academic plans, progress, and class schedule, as well as, help students develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to success in college including academic and career goal setting, learning strategies, time management and organization, self-regulation, and self-efficacy.

Provides academic advising to support student retention and graduation initiatives. Collaborates with faculty advisors and department chairs when applicable regarding a student's academic program and progression.

Explains academic policies, procedures, and guidelines to students to meet their educational goals. Supports students in developing the required academic plan to meet graduation requirements. Identifies and helps resolve obstacles impeding the academic success of students. Meets with students a minimum of two times per semester and as necessary.

Monitors progress of students in caseload with check-ins, scheduled meetings or proactive outreach and communication, responding to student questions, concerns and needs.

Fosters persistence and completion by maintaining a caseload of academic warning or probation students, first time in college and/or transfer students; utilizes college's early alert software as part of this caseload maintenance.

Implements Office of Student Success retention and persistence-based initiatives. Collaborates with various areas within and outside of the Student Services to facilitate student success, retention, and persistence. Maintains advising records and confidential student records in compliance with FERPA regulations.

Educates students about the value of academic advisement and the importance of the registration process. Informs advisees of significant deadlines regarding Course Add, Course Drop, Mid-Terms, Course Withdrawals, and academic support services.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Bachelor's degree and experience in student services programs.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree; at least 3 years experience in academic advising or related student support services. Experience with Colleague Self Service or other Higher Education Database systems.

Additional Comments

Evening/weekend hours and travel to other campuses may occasionally be required for scheduled events.
