Job summary

Community College of Allegheny County is seeking an Academic Advisor / Non-Teaching (Reg FT) to support new and continuing students. You will help craft academic plans, advise on degree options, and guide students through the registration process in a fully in-person setting.

You will collaborate with the Registrar, Financial Aid, Admissions, and Counseling to address student needs, monitor progress, and connect students with campus resources. Evening/weekend hours and travel may be required.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field is required.
  • Minimum of three years in higher education advising or student services.
  • Ability to assist diverse student populations with empathy.
  • Evening/weekend work and travel to other campuses may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide proactive, student-centered advising to new, prospective and current students.
  • Help with academic planning, course selection, and degree requirements.

Work Hours

Standard College hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm; Additional hours, including evening and weekend hours, may be needed to meet the needs of the department.

General Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director of Academic Advising and in collaboration with the Registrar or the supervisors in Financial Aid, Placement Testing, Admissions or Counseling, meet with and advise new, prospective and current students concerning their college studies, academic plan and educational needs, and provide appropriate support, guidance, information and direction to assist students to achieve their academic goals. Advisors engage students holistically, including career options as related to their academic program, curriculum options, majors, course planning, College policies and procedures, personal assistance and referral to college and community services and support.

Requirements
  • Master's Degree.
  • Three (3) years minimum experience in higher education: advising, counseling or related student services.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with student issues and ability to interact with students with diverse needs.
  • Workload schedule may include evenings and weekends, as well as travel to other campuses or centers.
Duties
  1. Provide coordinated, student-centered support through proactive, intentional caseload management by monitoring student progress, identifying barriers to success, connecting students with campus and community resources, and collaborating with faculty and support services to promote student retention, well-being, and academic achievement by utilizing the college's early alert system.
  2. Participate in mandatory training sessions, attend professional development workshops and activities as required, and assist in development of training materials and programs for faculty advisors.
  3. Interview students concerning their readiness for college studies, their choice of major, their need for developmental coursework, and the basic differences between the high school and college experience.
  4. Maintain knowledge of and disseminate information to students regarding resources and support services available on campus and across the College, and direct students to such services, as needed or appropriate.
  5. Provide advising services in the College advising centers and assist Registration and advisement and/or other supervisory personnel in providing prompt assistance to students regarding program requirements and the registration process.
  6. Develop academic schedules for new and continuing students utilizing the Degree Audit and other materials developed by the campus; provide students with information on all academic policy questions.
  7. Refer students to the CCAC Counseling Department for 4-year transfer guidance.
  8. Advise students changing their major by checking courses that apply to the new major (degree audit) and completing the appropriate paperwork.
  9. Meet with students applying for graduation (utilizing Degree Audit) to assess graduation status.
  10. Meet with students on academic notice, academic assistance, and other at-risk students and direct students, as necessary, to a counselor, success/life coach, or other student development professional.
  11. Use on-line student system to research student's transcript, availability of classes, and calendar information.
  12. Evening advising and/or advising on either Saturday or Sunday (but not both in the same week) may be required. Travel to other campuses and centers may also be required, as needed.
  13. Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
