Job summary

University of Missouri-Columbia seeks a dynamic, full-time Academic Advisor in the School of Journalism. You will provide holistic advising on degree programs and policies, helping students develop academic plans with a focus on success.

Responsibilities include orienting new students, maintaining confidential records, monitoring progression, and collaborating with campus partners on retention. Evening/weekend hours may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with at least 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Master's degree preferred; 1–2 years academic advising experience desirable.
  • Experience in advising within higher education is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Provide holistic academic advising to assigned students on policies, programs, and degree plans.
  • Refer students to enrichment opportunities to support academic and personal growth.
  • Help students identify interests, skills and academic goals and plan their careers.
  • Lead new student orientation and present information to students.
  • Maintain confidential records and monitor degree progress with checkpoints.
  • Identify at‑risk students and refer to appropriate campus resources; support retention initiatives.
  • Collaborate with university partners on recruitment and retention efforts; support graduation ceremonies.
