Academic Advisor

Position Summary: The Academic Advisor II in the Office of Undergraduate Advising meets with an assigned caseload of intended and in‑major students, provides accurate information about degree programs, recommends courses and academic services, maintains electronic records, engages in referrals, and monitors student progress.

Responsibilities
  • Works directly with intended and in‑major Exercise and Sport Science and Sport Management students as an academic advisor.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of Mary Frances Early College of Education majors, UGA requirements and policies.
  • Helps students understand programs of study and comply with institutional requirements.
  • Advises via scheduled in‑person, Zoom appointments, drop‑in visits, emails, and phone calls.
  • Assists students in course selection and other educational experiences.
  • Evaluates student progress toward established goals.
  • Assists students in decision‑making and career direction.
  • Refers students with academic difficulties to appropriate resources.
  • Displays care and concern for the well‑being of university students.
  • Actively seeks to improve processes and practices for supporting students.
  • Provides timely departmental updates to the Office of Undergraduate Advising.
  • Assists program coordinators with application and admissions processes for assigned majors.
  • Serves as a liaison to assigned MFECOE academic departments and helps with curriculum issues.
  • Reviews application and admissions process for Exercise and Sport Science major with students.
  • Occasionally assists with educational programming for MFECOE undergraduate students.
Qualifications
  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Years of experience and related skills as indicated in the Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies section.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Initiative to actively learn university and college degree requirements; interpret and communicate these requirements to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Organizational and time‑management skills; problem‑solving skills.
  • Comfort with learning digital student systems and platforms, Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and Zoom.
  • Work holistically with undergraduate students to enhance university experience.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Active listening.
Physical Demands

Sit for extended periods of time. Driving is not a responsibility of this position. This position has security access to public safety, IT security, personnel records, patient records, or access to chemicals and medications.

Employment Details

Employment Type: Full Time (FTE 1.00)
Work Schedule: Monday–Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Location: Athens area (University of Georgia)
Salary: Commensurate with experience
