Job summary

Job Description

The Myers-Lawson School of Construction (MLSoC) Academic Advisor will be cross-trained in the Building Construction (BC) and Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) programs, serving undergraduate students.


The following duties are customary for this position, but are not to be interpreted as all-inclusive:



  • Provide academic and career advising services to approximately 300 BC and CEM undergraduate students

  • Deliver accurate information and advice to students about majors/minors and course options

  • Identify educational and career options appropriate for each student and assist with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications

  • Monitor the academic progress of students

  • Identify current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring, counseling) and refer students to appropriate campus resources for assistance

  • Support class scheduling, enrollment, and systems related to class registration

  • Maintain student files and records; document all pertinent student information

  • Interpret and explain college and university policies and procedures

  • Participate in recruiting activities for the university, college, and department, including but not limited to new student orientation, new student welcome, change of major information sessions, open house, course request group advising, plan of study workshops, etc.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in educational administration, student development, or a related field from an accredited university, or a bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or a related field, with training and work experience at a level equivalent to an advanced degree. Experience working in a student-focused collegiate setting (e.g., academic advising, classroom instruction, counseling). Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain a high level of confidentiality. Experience in and/or knowledge of university operations, policies, and procedures in areas such as orientation, course registration, and degree and graduation requirements.


Preferred Qualifications

Working knowledge of NACADA academic advising pillars, competencies, and standards. Experience with student information systems, such as Banner, PeopleSoft, Starfish, Navigate, and degree audit software. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and present information clearly in one-on-one and group settings. Ability to occasionally work on an alternative schedule to facilitate advising and new student programming/events, as well as travel for recruiting purposes as needed. Work history showing strong computer skills in electronic file management, word processing, database management, and spreadsheets. working history showing excellent communication and presentation skills.
