Job summary

Bell County in Central Texas seeks a skilled 911 dispatcher to handle multiple phone lines, assess emergencies, and route calls to the appropriate department. You will enter data, assist with shift activity, and train new dispatchers to ensure rapid, accurate responses.

You will communicate across law enforcement, fire, EMS channels and maintain unit status while coordinating with supervisors. A comprehensive training path for licenses and certifications is provided.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Must read, write and speak English.
  • Paid training will be provided to assist obtaining the following licenses and certifications (TCOLE Telecommunicators, TLETS, TCIC, NCIC, CPR, TTY/TDD, ADA).

Responsibilities

  • Answer multiple telephone lines and assess emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Enter emergency data into dispatch systems and route calls to the correct department or agency.
  • Lead shift duties when supervisor is absent and train new dispatchers.
  • Coordinate daily dispatch assignments and schedule training sessions.
  • Maintain caller information and perform welfare checks on abandoned 911 calls.
  • Communicate over police, fire, EMS radio channels and notify services when requested.
  • Maintain unit status to ensure responder safety during incidents.
  • Operate TCIC/NCIC/CAD databases and perform data entry when systems fail.
  • Conduct background checks and inquiries on drivers’ licenses, vehicle tags, and wanted/missing persons.
  • Provide information from databases to officers as needed.
  • Notify supervisors of critical situations and weather or equipment issues.
  • Keep logs of daily activity and perform administrative support tasks.

Responsibilities
  • Answer multiple telephone lines and assess incoming emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Enter emergency call data into the dispatch computer and transfer/connect calls to the appropriate department, extension, service, or agency.
  • Assist with shift activity, inform adjacent shifts of calls or activities affecting them, and act as the lead shift worker during the absence of a supervisor.
  • Assist with training new dispatchers and prepare daily dispatch personnel assignments; schedule training sessions.
  • Maintain conversation with callers to obtain and verify pertinent information, comfort them until assistance arrives, and perform welfare checks on abandoned 911 calls.
  • Communicate effectively and coherently over law‑enforcement, fire, rescue, and EMS radio channels; notify ambulances, wreckers, utilities, and other services when they are requested or required.
  • Maintain the status of officers, fire, EMS, and other responding units at all times to ensure the safety of personnel involved in accidents, fires, hazardous incidents, and breaks.
  • Enter and retrieve data from TCIC, NCIC, CAD, and in‑house computers; modify, locate, maintain, save, clear files and records; record information manually on entry cards when the computer is out of service.
  • Perform computer background checks on criminals, peruse records for stolen pawn‑shop tickets, and handle inquiries on driver’s licenses, vehicle tags, stolen articles and property, guns, wanted and missing persons, and warrants and summons.
  • Provide various information from computer databases as requested by police officers.
  • Operate the telecommunications device for the deaf; issue cases and assign warrant numbers.
  • Perform pager, phone, and/or radio knock‑out tests as required.
  • Communicate with supervisors, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, and resolve problems.
  • Notify appropriate personnel and/or supervisors of critical situations, weather‑related information, and problems with communications or computer equipment.
  • Maintain assorted logs detailing daily activity including wrecker service, warrants, dispatching, messages, and TCIC/NCIC entries/retrievals of information.
  • Perform administrative support duties such as replenishing forms, changing computer paper, shredding confidential material, disseminating information to various departments, and pulling entry cards for validation.
  • Perform related work as required.
Qualifications
  • High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English.
  • Must successfully complete required licenses and/or certifications upon employment and maintain these throughout employment.
  • Paid training will be provided to assist the applicant in obtaining the following licenses and certifications: TCOLE Telecommunicators license, Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (TLETS) certification, Texas Crime Information Center (TCIC) full access certification, National Crime Information Center (NCIC) full access certification, nationally recognized CPR certification, TTY/TDD training, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance training.
Physical Demands

Perform sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis.
