Job summary

The City of Chicopee’s Department of Public Works’ Parks Division is hiring a 4L Laborer who will perform a wide variety of manual labor and operate machinery, vehicles and tools. Tasks are assigned by a supervisor and include upkeep of parks and recreation areas, fields, and playgrounds.

Responsibilities include raking, digging, mowing, snow/ice removal, custodial duties, planting and maintaining landscaping, and completing required paperwork.

Qualifications

• Valid Massachusetts Class D Driver's License and insurable driving record.
• High School Diploma or GED or one to three months related experience or equivalent.
• Some experience in maintenance work involving turf and landscape maintenance.
• General knowledge of parks and recreation department operations.

• Performs miscellaneous manual duties such as raking, shoveling, digging, hammering, painting, climbing ladders, lifting, bending, crawling, pulling, pushing and using manual tools, in the maintenance and renovation of parks, recreation areas, athletic fields, and playgrounds in preparation for active and passive recreational use or preservation as open space
• Drives and/or operates machinery, vehicles and tools to cut and trim grass, remove brush, groom fields and repair sport fields
• Works in cold or foul weather to create safe facilities including snow/ice removal and debris cleanup
• Performs custodial duties including removing trash, cleaning floors, windows, and equipment
• Attends to trees, shrubs and flowers and performs planting, trimming, weeding, removal and transplanting
• Utilizes chemicals safely to clean facilities and perform other maintenance tasks
• Observes and reports conditions that may indicate vandalism or equipment failure
• Completes assigned paperwork or logs reflecting tasks and inventory
• May advise seasonal laborers on tasks

SUMMARY

The City of Chicopee’s Department of Public Works’ Parks Division is hiring a 4L Laborer who will be responsible for performing a wide variety tasks to include but are not limited to manual labor and operating machinery, vehicles and tools. These tasks are assigned by a supervisor but may be performed without direct supervision. Laborer also provides documentation of tasks completed and monitors and makes repairs to equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE:

• Performs miscellaneous manual duties such as raking, shoveling, digging, hammering, painting, climbing ladders, lifting, bending, crawling, pulling, pushing and using manual tools, in the maintenance and renovation of parks, recreation areas, athletic fields, and playgrounds in preparation for active and passive recreational use or preservation as open space
• Drives and/or operates machinery, vehicles and tools safely and effectively in order to cut and trim grass, cut and remove brush, groom, line and repair sport fields, including but limited lo power tools, mower, snow/leaf blower, groomer, painting machine, sprayer, weed whip, truck, cart, pallet jack and compressor.
• Works in cold or foul weather to create safe and usable facilities including snow removal, ice removal, plowing, shoveling, removing debris or downed tree limbs and to prepare facilities such as parks, ice rinks, sidewalks, parking lots and streets for use.
• Performs tasks associated with the renovation or repair including but not limited to all for mentioned equipment, plus fences, restrooms, water fountains, irrigation, pools and drainage systems.
• Performs custodial duties including removing trash, cleaning floors, windows, and equipment
• Attends to trees, shrubs, undergrowth and flowers by planting, trimming, weeding, removal and transplanting,
• Utilize chemicals safely to clean comfort stations, removes graffiti from facilities and equipment, fuel equipment, balance pool water and paint as well as other applications,
• Observes and reports conditions in parks and sport fields or with facilities that may be a result of vandalism, wear and tear or mechanical failure.
• Listens for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunction and discusses machine/vehicle operation variations with supervisor or others to assist in diagnosing problem or repair.
• Completes assigned paperwork or computer-based forms accurately to reflect tasks accomplished, inventory, preventative maintenance log, field observations, requests for use of earned lime, or for other reasons.
• May on occasion advise and support seasonal or temporary laborers on an assigned tasks.

• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) or one to three (1-3) months’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent of education and experience. – Required
• Some experience in maintenance work involving turf and landscape maintenance, working outdoors in adverse weather and other essential job duties listed above.
• General knowledge of parks and recreation department operations.
