Location: IAM National Benefit Funds Office, Washington, DC
The IAM National Benefits Fund Office is conducting a search for a 401(k) Benefits Specialist to assist in the organization and administration of the IAM National 401(k) Plan. This role will provide direct support for the operation of the 401(k) Department, using independent judgment and decision-making to evaluate and recommend on matters related to benefit plan administration. This position will report directly to the 401(k) Manager and is a Non-Bargaining Unit position. IAM-BFO requires employees to work on-site in Washington, DC. Applicants must be local to the area.
- Review and resolve participant and employer inquiries related to checks, wires, Automated Clearing House (ACH), outstanding payments, payment plans, debits, credits, and account reconciliation of the 401(k) Plan.
- Maintain accurate records of employer delinquent and collection activities.
- Prepare and distribute letters to employers in accordance with the delinquency/collection policy.
- Collaborate with new and existing contributing employers on reporting of employer and participant contributions and census data to ensure timely and accurate funding transfers.
- Conduct annual review of all qualified plan compliance and data.
- Coordinate and perform annual nondiscrimination and compliance testing for the 401(k) Plan, including ADP/ACP testing and other applicable testing requirements; identify testing failures or data discrepancies and coordinate corrective actions with appropriate vendors and internal staff; coordinate with consultants, auditors, actuaries, and recordkeepers during testing cycles.
- Coordinate data collection and provide accurate and timely responses to external requests from auditors and/or vendors for the completion of a requested review.
- Receives and reconciles invoices from vendors and/or service providers; processes and submits timely fund requests.
- Drafts written communication to employers/participants regarding 401(k) plan updates.
- Fully compliant administration of 401(k) plans according to ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code, and all applicable regulations.
- Prepare participants' accounts for the processing of Qualified Domestic Relations Orders.
Qualifications and Preferred Attributes
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Communications, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Behavioral Science, Organizational Behavior, or related field.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in customer service management, ideally within pension or employee benefits administration.
- Strong working knowledge of ERISA and its application to defined benefit pension plans.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and conflict resolution skills.
- Proficiency in Customer Relationship Management systems and contact center management software.
- Familiarity with IAM Benefit Trust Fund and IAM National Pension Fund operations.
- Ability to interpret and communicate complex pension rules and simplify them to participants.
