Job summary

A leading benefits fund organization is seeking a Senior HR Generalist in Washington, DC. This role supports HR operations including benefits administration, compliance, and employee engagement. The Senior HR Generalist plays a key role in supporting the IAM Benefit Funds Office’s HR operations. Under the general supervision of the Director of Human Resources, the Sr. Generalist provides professional HR services in areas such as benefits administration and maintenance, statutory compliance with applicable labor laws, full-lifecycle employee engagement (including onboarding and offboarding), and HRIS/payroll system management.

  • Assist with the creation and enforcement of HR policies; conduct regular compliance tracking across national and local levels, and recommend updates or additions to existing Fund policies and procedures.
  • Maintain HR systems and records; ensure data accuracy and timely updates across multiple platforms.
  • Administer the FMLA and ADA processes from beginning to end—ensuring compliance, communication with all stakeholders, and accurate leave tracking.
  • Design and prepare reports from HRIS and other applicable systems.
  • Collaborate with appropriate internal stakeholders (e.g., Legal Department, Accounting) to identify potential liabilities; regularly review existing Fund policies to identify areas of need.
  • Provide internal support and partnership to business lines to deliver required human resources guidance; participate in and help inform discussions of labor relations matters.
  • Assist in the management of grievance avoidance/grievances, dispute resolution, participation in Labor Management Committees, and other functional interactions related to labor-management.
  • Facilitate onboarding for new employees, including orientation, benefits explanation, and I-9 verification.
  • Coordinate required training programs, compliance reporting, and HR calendar events.
  • Provide guidance and information to employees regarding HR-related inquiries and Fund policies.
  • Collaborate on special projects and continuous improvement initiatives within the HR Department.
📚 Qualifications and Preferred Attributes
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Design, Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Five (5)+ years of progressive HR experience, preferably in a union or Taft-Hartley Fund environment.
  • Thorough understanding of collective bargaining agreements and interactions with staff unions.
  • SHRM-CP or PHR certification preferred, but not required.
  • Comprehensive understanding of HR compliance, benefits, compensation, and HRIS systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; ADP experience a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of FMLA, ADA, and related employment regulations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • A customer-service-oriented approach to working with employees.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
