Job summary

Maine Maritime Academy is seeking a 3rd Mate to act as an officer of the watch, oversee training of Cadets, and supervise deck operations aboard the training vessel. The candidate must hold USCG Third Mate Unlimited tonnage credentials and STCW endorsements as required.

The role includes safety duties, deployment participation, and leadership in high-stress environments. Applicants should be able to pass a pre-employment medical and background check.

Qualifications

• Thorough knowledge of shipboard systems and equipment.
• Experience as Officer in Charge of Navigational Watch.
• Willingness to teach and evaluate Cadets objectively.
• Excellent health and positive attitude.
• Ability to lead in close environments.
• Ability to teach Safety Management Systems.
• Basic ECDIS certification and MS Office proficiency.
• Familiarity with maintenance/inventory tracking systems (e.g., NSE).

Responsibilities

• Perform duties of a 3rd Mate.
• Act as Ship's Safety Officer and manage safety equipment inventories.
• Supervise and train Cadets in deck machinery and safety.
• Coordinate with Officers on shipboard maintenance.
• Participate in damage control training and safety evolutions.
• Stand watches as a licensed deck officer.
• Support pilot transfer, anchoring, mooring and cargo ops as assigned.
