2nd Shift Material Handler

Salary Range: $23.00 To $23.00 Hourly

Position Title: MATERIAL HANDLER

Position Summary: Drives gasoline-, liquefied gas-, or electric-powered industrial truck equipped with lifting devices (such as forklift, boom, scoop, lift beam and swivel-hook, fork-grapple, clamps, elevating platform, or trailer hitch), and operates overhead and jib cranes to push, pull, lift, stack, tier, or move products, equipment, or materials in the shop. Performs any combination of the following tasks to assist in machine shop activities.

Reports to: Production Control Supervisor

Personnel: Not applicable.

Duties:

  • Move levers and presses pedals to drive truck and control movement of lifting apparatus.
  • Position forks, lifting platform, or other lifting device under, over, or around loaded pallets, skids, boxes, products, or materials or hook tow trucks to trailer hitch, and transport load to designated area.
  • Unload and stack material by raising and lowering lifting device.
  • Deliver metal parts or stock to designated work areas for machining, using electric pallet mover, hoist, or overhead crane.
  • Lift metal part or stock onto machine, manually or using hoist, and secure it on machine table, in chuck, or fixture, using wrenches, to assist in setting up machine.
  • May inventory materials on work floor, and supplies workers with materials as needed.
  • May weigh materials or products and records weight on tags, labels, or production schedules.
  • Add coolant to reservoirs of machines and lubricate machine parts and ways, using grease gun and oilcan.
  • Reclaim cutting and lubricating oils from machines by pumping oil from machine reservoir into barrel, dumping oil from barrel into centrifugal separator that removes metal chips and dirt from oil, and drain clean oil from separator into containers.
  • Remove metal chips and shavings from surfaces of machines, using rag or air hose, and wipe surfaces of machines with rag to remove excess oil.
  • Clean around work areas, using broom and shovel.
  • May separate metal shavings, chips, and scrap materials from trash and places them in bins for resale.
  • Remove burrs or excess metal from machined parts, using files, sandpaper, emery cloth, or grinding machine.
  • Communicate with co-workers and supervisor to receive instructions and coordinate activities.
  • Assist receiving and inspection in the timely and efficient movement of materials. Using tow motor and/or material handling equipment, load and unload company and vendor trucks. In the case of raw material plate or unique customer supplied items, employ knowledge of correct material handling equipment and procedures. Store materials in designated locations. Seek assistance in handling large and/or difficult items.
  • Assist stores, burnout and saw room areas in the movement of routed items, scrap or items designated for off-site storage. Move items at the direction of the supervisor or as requested by various work centers. Ensure that routed items contain a bar code router and that the current operation has been signed off in black ink.
  • Responsible for the following areas: stores aisle, receiving dock and saw room. Strive daily to keep these areas clear of unauthorized equipment, such as spreader bars, mark lifts/wildcats, welders, tow motors, etc. Disposal of skids and trash is the primary responsibility of maintenance, although, the material handler should assist as needed.
  • Required to visually inspect material handling equipment for mechanical problems prior to each application. Notify supervisor if tow motor maintenance work orders are needed.
  • Conform to all company safety policies.
  • As the primary responsibilities listed above are completed, or at supervisor’s direction, the material handler becomes available to assist the work centers with their material handling needs.

Job Qualification Requirements:

Educational Experience - High school diploma or G.E.D.

Experience –

Physical Demands - The employee is required to:

  • stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor
  • exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or
  • exert 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and /or
  • exert up to 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Certification Required - Company Fork Lift and Crane Operator Permit; up to and including certification in Specialist Lifting and Rigging, Boom and Scissor Lift and ‘Big Red’ Fork Lift.

Visual Acuity - Near acuity and accommodation are required for reading machine dial gauges, blueprints, and precision measuring instruments used in the inspection of parts.

Working Conditions - The employee is subject to:

  • high noise levels from operating machines
  • physical hazards from moving equipment and production components
  • breathing fumes, dust and mist
  • skin exposure to oils and cutting fluids.

The employee may be required to follow other job-related instructions and to perform other job-related duties as requested, subject to all applicable state and federal laws.
