Job summary

Steel America, a business unit of Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc., is seeking a 1st Class Inside Machinist on the 2nd shift in Norfolk, VA. You will perform precision machining on ship components using lathes, mills, grinders and boring mills to exact specs.

Read blueprints, set up equipment, and inspect parts with micrometers and calipers to ensure tight tolerances. Five years’ inside machinist experience or a relevant apprenticeship is required; extended hours and limited travel may be needed.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years as an inside machinist with marine/shipyard experience or completion of a registered apprenticeship.
• Proficient in reading blueprints and inspecting to tight tolerances.
• Able to operate lathes, mills, grinders, and boring mills safely and accurately.
• Experience with micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring tools.

Responsibilities

• Perform precision machining with lathes, milling machines, grinders and boring mills.
• Read blueprints and specs to plan machining operations.
• Fabricate and repair ship system components to tight tolerances.
• Assemble machined parts to shipboard systems and verify alignment.
• Inspect parts with micrometers, calipers and gauges for conformance.
• Set up machines, select tools and materials, and adjust settings.
• Maintain equipment and troubleshoot machining issues.
• Document work hours and material usage; collaborate across trades.
• Mentor crew members and ensure safety and quality standards.
