Missouri Department of Transportation in Sikeston, MO is seeking a materials intern to sample and test construction materials (steel, pipe, paint, asphalt, cement) to ensure compliance with specifications. You will assist with aggregate testing, prepare samples for bituminous mixes, and coordinate with contractors.

The role targets engineering students; enrollment in ABET-accredited programs, 30 credits completed, and GPA of at least 2.0 are required.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a bachelor's or post-bachelor's program full-time (12 credits).
  • Engineering candidates require ABET-accredited program.
  • Must have completed at least 30 credits and maintain a 2.0 GPA.

Responsibilities

  • Sample and test general construction materials (steel, pipe, paint, asphalt, cement) for specs compliance.
  • Sample and test aggregates for quality and gradation at quarries, approve or reject materials.
  • Prepare samples for bituminous trial mixes and coordinate with contractors.
  • Possibly act as inspector in charge at plants producing bituminous mixtures.
  • Inspect prestressed or precast concrete and test materials for federal-aid projects.
  • Maintain records of test results and material approvals for projects.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required.

Enrolled in relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12 credit hours); ABET-accredited for engineering candidates

  • Samples and test fine and coarse aggregate production for quality and gradation specification compliance at quarries supplying materials for department projects and approves/rejects material.
  • Prepares samples for bituminous trial mixes; coordinates with contractor on trial mix information.
  • May perform duties of inspector in charge at plants producing bituminous mixtures to determine if the material produced conforms to specifications and approves or rejects the material.
  • May perform inspections of prestressed or precast concrete and special sampling and testing of materials required on federal aid projects.
  • May maintain records of test results, product records, and reports of general materials and aggregates approved for each project or for maintenance use.
  • Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.

This position will be filled based on previous experience as an engineering student internship.

The entry salary is posted above, with year-two rate of $23.30 per hour and year-three rate of $24.92 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12 credit hours); for engineering candidates, program must be ABET-accredited.
  • 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.
  • Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.
