TITLE: Teacher Assistant

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

RESUME AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:

  • College transcript showing a degree was earned.
  • College transcript showing at least 48 college‑level courses completed (remedial/pre‑requisite courses not counted).
  • College transcript showing at least 24 college‑level courses completed plus WorkKeys Assessment with passing scores in: (1) Workplace Documents (Reading) – score 4 or better; (2) Business Writing – score 3 or better; (3) Applied Mathematics – score 4 or better.

Ability to solve minor problems and follow detailed written and oral instructions.

Must obtain and maintain a CDL Bus license and drive a bus when called upon.

REPORTS TO: Principal and Assigned Teacher(s)

JOB GOAL: To support the teacher in the teaching‑learning process for students.

ANNOUNCED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic Assistance
  • Gives group instruction as prescribed by teacher; provides individualized instruction.
  • Demonstrates various instructional activities.
  • Checks and corrects students’ work while in progress; keeps students on task.
  • Praises and reinforces achievement of students.
  • Reports student progress to teacher.
Instructional Preparation/Support
  • Arranges classroom furnishings and equipment, prepares visual aids and duplicates materials.
  • Reorganizes materials at the end of day.
  • Serves as proctor during testing; scores students’ papers as instructed by teacher; distributes and collects instructional materials.
  • Attends workshops.
Report and Records
  • Checks and reports attendance.
  • Enters data in health record, records student behavior and files data according to regulatory requirements.
Monitoring Student Behavior
  • Supervises students in the classroom and in other locations.
  • Creates and distributes awards for positive behavior.
  • Promotes student self‑esteem; teaches citizenship, social skills, and respect for others.
  • Reconciles minor student conflicts.
  • Participates in development of discipline and policy.
  • Disciplines misbehavior through approved methods.
  • Reports discipline problems to teacher or principal.
  • Reports significant change or lack of change in student behavior.
Bus Driver Responsibilities (CDL)
  • Obtains and maintains a CDL bus license.
  • Completes the pre‑trip and post‑trip inspection.
  • Drives a bus when called upon to do so while maintaining proficiency in driving skills.
  • Maintains bus route schedule.
  • Maintains discipline and reports undisciplined students to school administration.
  • Discharges students only at authorized stops and transports only authorized students.
  • Complies with local and state traffic regulations and observes all mandatory safety regulations.
  • Reports delays and accidents.
  • Cleans the interior of the bus.

Serves as a team player and role model for other employees; demonstrates commitment to continuous quality improvement; supports and exhibits organizational core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, customer‑driven focus, and fairness.

Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) when requested for purposes of driving a school bus.
  • Must communicate orally and in writing with parents, staff, and community leaders.
  • Must have finger dexterity and be able to perform basic life operational functions of kneeling, sitting, standing, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Background check with local and state law enforcement agencies required.
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
