Job Title: Special Education Assistant
Reports to: Principal and teacher(s) assigned
Dept./School: Campus Assigned
Exemption Status: Non-Exempt / 187 days

Salary calculations will be commensurate with job experience.

Primary Purpose:
Help special education teacher provide for physical and instructional needs of studentswith disabilities in special education setting. Assist in implementation of classroomprograms, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Workunder general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Valid Texas educational aide certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Ability to work with children with disabilities
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively
Knowledge of general office equipment

Experience:
Prior experience working with children preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

• 1. Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials, classroom displays, and instructionalactivities.
• 2. Work with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional activities/exercises asassigned by the teacher.
• 3. Assist in the implementation of each student’s Individual Education Program as directed bythe teacher.
• 4. Assist with the administration and scoring of student assignments and tests.
• 5. Assist in monitoring and supervising students throughout the school day, both inside andoutside the classroom, including cafeteria, bus, or playground duty, as assigned.
• 6. Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom.
• 7. Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of supplies and materials.
• 8. Assist the teacher in keeping records and preparing required reports.
• 9. Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, asappropriate.
• 10. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
• 11. Assist the teacher in the use of instructional technology for students.
• 12. Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of students.
• 13. Maintain strict confidentiality.
• 14. Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, board policy, and federal andstate laws, rules, and regulations.
• 15. Perform all other duties as assigned.
