Description
Position Purpose: The Early Literacy Specialist (4K–3) promotes strong student outcomes in reading by providing instructional coaching, co-teaching, co-planning, and small group instruction. This role supports the implementation of district-adopted curriculum and Act 20 through effective use of tools such as Aimsweb and Panorama, while helping teachers develop instructional routines and classroom practices. The specialist leads the K-5 EMLSS process at the building level, engages in individual and group coaching cycles, supports instructional PLCs using the PDSA framework, and contributes to curriculum development, assessment practices, and professional learning at both the building and district levels

- Preferred - Understanding of aimsweb, Panorama, and Infinite Campus in order to support teachers, administrators, and support staff in data driven decision making
Essential Performance Responsibilities
- Support implementation of district-adopted curriculum and Act 20 using tools such as Aimsweb and Panorama.
- Lead the implementation of the K-5 Equitable Multi-Level System of Support (EMLSS) at the building level.
- Coach individual teachers and grade-level teams through student-centered coaching cycles to strengthen literacy instruction and alignment to district goals.
- Co-teach, co-plan, and model high-impact literacy strategies in classrooms.
- Help teachers establish effective instructional routines, small group practices, and classroom management procedures.
- Maintain expertise in national, state, and district standards, frameworks, and research-based instructional practices related to Early Literacy.
- Design, deliver, and evaluate job-embedded professional learning aligned with district curriculum to deepen teacher capacity in 4K–3 literacy practices.
- Participate in district committees, meetings, and seminars to stay informed about instructional expectations and best practices.
- Serve as a liaison between classroom teachers and Assessment, Curriculum, & Instruction (ACI) content supervisors.
- Support instructional PLCs at the building level using the PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act) framework.
- Analyze formative and summative assessment data to inform instructional decisions, monitor curriculum alignment, and enhance student outcomes.
- Demonstrate exemplary instructional practices through coaching, modeling, collaborative lesson planning, and leading lesson studies and professional learning sessions.
- Collaborate with district and school leaders to select, maintain, and evaluate effective curriculum materials and methodologies.
- Coordinate the development and implementation of Early Literacy curriculum to meet district objectives and compliance standards.
- Research, evaluate, and recommend curriculum, instruction, and assessment resources to support continuous improvement and innovation.
- Guide educators in using assessment data to inform instruction and meet local, state, and federal expectations.
- Share current research and best practices to promote high-quality literacy instruction and student achievement.
- Plan and lead training on Early Literacy integration and innovative program development for classroom implementation.
- Engage in continuous professional learning and reflection to improve instructional leadership and effectiveness.
- Design and lead district wide professional learning sessions aligned to Early Literacy goals.
- Adhere to all district policies, procedures, and directives.
- Complete other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Deep knowledge of the 2020 Wisconsin English Language Arts Standards and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), with the ability to translate standards into effective classroom practice.
- Strong understanding of evidence-based literacy instruction theories, techniques, and methodologies, particularly in early literacy (4K–3).
- Experience in the design, development, and implementation of 4K–3 curriculum, with alignment to district goals and state standards.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data from multiple sources (e.g., Aimsweb, Panorama, formative/summative assessments) to design, implement, monitor, and evaluate early literacy initiatives.
- Knowledge of the EMLSS framework and effective strategies for tiered academic support in literacy.
- Proficiency in supporting teachers with instructional routines, small group strategies, and classroom management practices.
- Skilled in using student-centered coaching practices, including engaging in coaching cycles, co-teaching, co-planning, and modeling instructional strategies.
- Ability to articulate and support the implementation of literacy curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment across all tiers of instruction.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in working collaboratively within Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and cross-functional teams using continuous improvement models (e.g., PDSA).
- Strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practices, with the ability to meet the diverse needs of students and foster a respectful school community.
- Ability to build positive relationships and work cooperatively with staff, families, students, and community members across diverse backgrounds.
- Capacity to recognize sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality in all professional interactions.
- Understanding of how to address cultural diversity, differentiated instruction, and accommodations for students with special needs.
- Commitment to ongoing professional growth and staying current with research and best practices in literacy education.
