Job summary

Chippewa County is seeking a Land Resource Technician Intern to support nonmetallic mine site reclamation and stormwater programs. This limited-term role requires up to 40 hours/week for 6–7 months (975 hours) with May–November 2027 timing.

The internship targets students or recent graduates in Environmental Science, Resource Management or related fields, with GIS/CAD mapping and MS Office proficiency. A valid driver’s license is required for field work.

Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in or a recent graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Resource Management, Ecology, Biology, Geography, or related field.
  • Knowledge of cartography with exposure to mapping software (ArcGIS preferred) or CAD software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Knowledge of soil science, geology, and plant science is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Review annual Reclamation Reports and Activities Plan for industrial sand mines and sand and gravel operations.
  • Update and evaluate groundwater elevation/chemistry and chemical use databases.
  • Inspect mines and site operations to record conditions and evaluate reclamation compliance.
  • Inspect stormwater facilities and prepare inspection reports with follow-up actions.
  • Update and maintain databases for permitted nonmetallic mine operations and stormwater facilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Environmental/Project Engineer or Department Director.

JOB SUMMARY

The focus of the Land Resource Technician Intern includes technical support for nonmetallic mine site reclamation and the stormwater management program. This is a limited term internship position and requires up to 40 hours per week during a period of 6-7 months for a commitment of 975 hours.

This position is seasonal, non-recurring, and limited term which requires up to 40 hours per week during a 6-7 month period May - November 2027 for a commitment of 975 hours.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties described below are indicative of what the Land Resource Technician Intern might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any county ordinances created for the position of Land Resource Technician Intern. This is not an exhaustive list of job responsibilities and therefore other duties may be assigned:

Administrative Functions:
  • Review individual annual Reclamation Reports and Activities Plan for industrial sand mines and sand and gravel operations.
  • Update and evaluate databases of groundwater elevations, groundwater chemistry, and chemical use for industrial sand mines subject to reporting requirements.
  • Inspect industrial sand mines and sand and gravel site operations to record physical site conditions evaluate mine reclamation compliance. Prepared inspection reports. Perform follow-up inspections to assure compliance.
  • Inspect stormwater facilities to record physical site conditions and evaluate site compliance. Prepare inspection reports. Perform follow-up inspections to assure compliance.
  • , Update and maintain databases for all permitted nonmetallic mine operations and permitted stormwater facilities.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Environmental Engineer, Project Engineer, and/or Department Director.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Must be currently enrolled in or recent graduate with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Resource Management, Ecology, Biology, Geography, or other closely related course of study.
  • Knowledge of cartography with exposure to mapping software (ArcGIS preferred) or CAD software required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) required.
  • A valid driver's license required.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of soil science, geology, and plant science preferred.
  • Knowledge of construction excavation techniques and materials, and/or agricultural field operations (tillage, planting, etc.) preferred.
