Job summary

The Hecla Mining Company is offering a 2027 Geotechnical Engineering Internship in Alaska. The intern will monitor seismic activity, assist in ground support projects, and perform rock bolt pull testing in an active underground mine.

Internship runs from May to September 1, 2027, with safety training provided on day one and housing available. Applicants must be enrolled in a relevant geotechnical-related program and able to pass pre-employment drug testing.

2027 Internship, Geotechnical Engineering

As our Geotechnical Engineering Intern, you will perform monitoring and reporting on seismic activity, participate in ground support projects, and perform rock bolt pull testing in a producing mining operation. You'll start every job with safety first by inspecting your workplace and your equipment.

  • Here’s what you can expect in this role:
  • Training first. Every hire is provided MSHA training in the first 4 days on the job. We also provide department-level training on not just what to do, but safety, as well.
  • You will perform fieldwork in an underground mining environment.
  • Safety is important. Every piece of equipment and each work area must be inspected before we start the day for your safety and the safety of your team.
  • You will be paid, and have access to medical, dental, and vision coverage, as well as a 401 (k) with company match. Housing will be provided.
  • Internships occur between May and September 1, 2027.
  • You will be a part of team you can rely on, a team that will have your back.

Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in school for the Fall 2026 semester in geotechnical engineering, mining engineering, geology, or related field.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug testing.

Thanks to the #4 Shaft project, the mine is expected to have another 20-30 years of mine life and will continue to provide quality jobs and community support to north Idaho.
