Job summary

Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking an Environmental Assessment intern to support NEPA documentation, field surveys, and data collection under supervision in Indianapolis, IN or other listed offices.

The role emphasizes learning, data gathering, and assisting in permit applications while developing GIS and reporting skills. The intern should be enrolled in Environmental Science or related fields, have strong communication and analytical abilities, and bring familiarity with GIS

Qualifications

  • Actively enrolled in relevant field of study such as Environmental Science, Environmental Biology, Natural Resources, Biology, Ecology, or Environmental Engineering.
  • Ideal candidate will have completed sophomore year, be enrolled in an accredited 4-year college or university and be familiar with Geographic Information System software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and analyze information using MS Office.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare NEPA documentation primarily for categorical exclusion-level projects but also environmental assessments and environmental impact statements.
  • Gather and provide data for the preparation of environmental reports and studies.
  • Assist in conducting various environmental field surveys including threatened and endangered species habitat surveys, tree identification, stream characterizations, and wetland delineations.
  • Utilize software packages such as ArcGIS Pro for environmental data gathering and exhibit creation.
  • Assist in the preparation of environmental permit applications.
  • Perform related duties such as writing memoranda, letters, or general reports; collecting and correlating data; maintaining records; attending meetings; and operating technical equipment.

Our Environmental Assessment discipline comprises environmental scientists and biologists who navigate local, state, and federal National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) regulations and permitting for primarily public-sector projects, including Departments of Transportation (DOTs) and local governments.

Key Responsibilities: Environmental Assessment interns will be expected to perform the following key responsibilities with supervision and assistance from a Hanson professional:

Qualifications
  • Interns must be actively enrolled in a relevant field of study such as Environmental Science, Environmental Biology, Natural Resources, Biology, Ecology, or Environmental Engineering.
  • The ideal candidate will have completed their sophomore year, be enrolled in an accredited 4-year college or university and be familiar with Geographic Information System software.
Key requirements are listed but not limited to the following
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Valid driver’s license

This position can be located in the following offices: Indianapolis, IN; St. Louis, MO; or Springfield, IL.

The hourly range for this position is $21 - $26 per hour for undergraduates and $30 - $40 per hour for postgraduates.
