Description

Examines vehicle and discusses with user or supervisor nature and extent of damage or malfunction.

Plans work procedure, using charts, technical manuals, schematics, and experience.

Raises vehicle, using hydraulic jack, hoist, vehicle lifts, or overhead crane to gain access to mechanical units bolted to underside of vehicle.

Removes components, such as engine, transmission, or differential, using wrenches and hoist.

Disassembles unit and inspects parts for wear, using micrometers, calipers, and thickness gauges.

Repairs or replaces parts, such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings, using mechanics hand tools.

Repairs and rebuilds engines, transmissions, differentials and any other drive train components.

Overhauls or replaces carburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps.

Diagnose, repair, calibrate, and test vehicle computer controlled and modern automotive electrical systems.

Repairs and maintains vehicle fuel components such as tanks, pumps, injectors, and lines.

Repairs and maintains vehicle cooling systems components such as radiators, fans, belts, and hoses.

Repairs and Installs vehicle and equipment electrical components, such as starters, alternators, generators, lights, communication equipment, and wiring.

Repairs or replaces brake system components. Adjusts brakes, repairs or replaces shock absorbers, leaf springs, struts, and all other suspension components.

Mends damaged body and fenders by hammering out or filling in dents, welding broken parts and automotive refinishing.

Installs and repairs tires (large and small) including patching, mounting and balancing.

Uses electronic scanners and related tools to diagnose, calibrate, and repair electronic vehicle computer controlled systems.

Maintains and repairs hydraulic systems such as, pumps, valves, cylinders. Fabricates and replaces lines or hoses.

Fabricates and repairs metal parts or components using welders, cutting torches, grinders, drill press, lathe, hydraulic press, and band saw.

Repairs and maintains vehicle HVAC components such as compressors, thermostats, and blower motors.

Repairs and replaces air system components such as compressors, valves, spring brake chambers, air lines and other components.

Uses typical shop equipment such as oil and grease dispensing equipment, parts washer, vehicle exhaust system, and tow motor.

Uses computerized vehicle maintenance management software. Maintains records and completes repair orders.

Ability to follow written and oral instructions and follow repair manuals: skill in the use and care of hand tools and equipment.

Must supply his/her own tools required for the position.

Perform service calls, picks up and delivers vehicles and tracks down and retrieves parts and supplies.

Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in division.

Ability to understand and communicate written instructions.

Related and other duties as required.

Responsible to self-initiate activities consistent with the City of Sandusky’s and department’s goals and objectives.

Must report for work at required time and date and maintain a responsible attendance record.

Responds as needed to call-in/overtime requests.

The ability to follow a supervisor’s instructions, tolerate certain levels of stress, and attend work on a punctual, regular basis.

Requirements

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Specific Vocational Preparation includes an occupationally significant combination of: vocational education, apprentice training, in-plant training, on-the-job training, or essential experience in less responsible jobs which lead to the higher job or serving in other jobs.

Over 2 years up to and including 4 years.

Valid Ohio Commercial Driver’s License and all applicable endorsements or obtain one within 480 working hours.

Summary

Repairs, fabricates and overhauls automobiles, trucks, and other City equipment. Performs general, preventative maintenance and repair of all City vehicles and equipment with a minimum of supervision and does related work as required.
