Job description

Worcester Cultural Academy is seeking a skilled, compassionate, and dependable Registered Nurse to join our team in Worcester, MA. This is a part-time position (3 days per week, 8 hours per day) working under the direction of our School Nurse Manager. We are looking for someone who brings clinical expertise, genuine care for children and families, and the ability to be a calm and trusted presence in a busy school environment. Bilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply, and we welcome all candidates who reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity of our community.

Who We Are

Worcester Cultural Academy (WCA) is a growing charter public school that opened in August 2023 with a vision of becoming a K-8 community. We launched as a K-4 school and have added a grade every year since - this fall we welcome our first 7th graders. As an EL (Expeditionary Learning) Education school, we believe in hands-on learning that challenges students to grow in three dimensions: mastery of knowledge and skills, character, and high-quality work. We partner with organizations like the EcoTarium, Worcester Art Museum, and Hanover Theater and anchor our curriculum in Learning Expeditions that make learning meaningful and real. Healthy, safe students are the foundation of everything we do - and our school nurse is essential to making that possible.

We want to be honest with prospective candidates: this is energizing, demanding work. Our student population includes children with complex medical needs, severe allergies, and a wide range of health considerations. You will be the primary clinical presence in the building on the days you are here, working in close coordination with our School Nurse Manager who provides continuity and oversight across the full week. If you are someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment and genuinely loves working with kids, you will fit right in.

What You'll Do
Direct Student Health Care
  • Provide episodic and emergency health care to ill or injured students, responding quickly and calmly to a wide range of situations
  • Conduct health assessments, implement interventions, and provide follow-up care for students with acute and chronic health needs
  • Manage complex cases with high-need students, including coordination with families, physicians, and outside health care providers
  • Develop and maintain Individual Health Care Plans and Emergency Action Plans for students with special health needs, integrating these into 504 plans and IEPs as applicable
  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and Massachusetts Department of Public Health regulations
Public Health and Compliance
  • Engage in public health functions including disease surveillance, immunization compliance monitoring, and health promotion initiatives
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date health files for each student including cumulative medical records and vaccination documentation
  • Maintain a detailed log of medication administration, assessments, interventions, and family communications
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and school policies including FERPA and HIPAA
  • Coordinate hearing, vision, and dental screenings, exams, and follow-up care
  • Maintain health cabinets with all necessary medical supplies, including safe handling, storage, and disposal of prescription medications and hazardous waste
Staff Training and Education
  • Train unlicensed school personnel to administer scheduled medications and epinephrine in accordance with Massachusetts state regulations
  • Educate students and staff on health procedures, policies, and wellness practices
  • Serve as a resource to teachers and staff on health-related concerns and accommodations for students with medical needs
Family and Community Engagement
  • Communicate proactively and compassionately with families about their child's health needs, incidents, and care plans
  • Facilitate referrals to appropriate medical and community-based resources, connecting families with support beyond the school
  • Build trusting relationships with families across cultural and linguistic differences, using interpretation support as needed
Coordination and Collaboration
  • Work closely and communicate consistently with the School Nurse Manager to ensure seamless continuity of care across the full school week
  • Identify students with potential health-related learning needs and coordinate with the Director of Student Supports
  • Collaborate with special education staff to ensure health needs are accurately reflected in IEPs and 504 plans
  • Support the school's health and wellness initiatives in partnership with the School Nurse Manager
What You Bring
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a related field preferred
