Job summary

Ellensburg School District is seeking a Grounds/Maintenance worker to perform a variety of maintenance tasks across district facilities and grounds. The role requires hands-on expertise in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, grounds care, and related maintenance activities to keep the environment safe and functional for students and staff.

You will operate and repair irrigation systems, prune shrubs/trees, and assist with weed control.

Qualifications

• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and work in various weather conditions.

Responsibilities

REPORTS TO: Maintenance/Custodial Director

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Maintenance/Custodial Director, this position performs manual and skilled work related to maintaining school district facilities and grounds. The position requires knowledge and skills in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, grounds care, and related maintenance activities. Performs a variety of skilled tasks to create and maintain a safe and comfortable environment for students, staff, parents, and the general public. Must have the ability to be flexible and adapt to changing job situations in a cooperative manner.

Essential Job Functions

• Implement and assist with a variety of repairs and maintenance activities.
• Perform electrical repairs, including changing ballasts, switches, and fixtures.
• Perform plumbing repairs, including unclogging drains and repairing or replacing fixtures.
• Perform carpentry work, including framing walls, hanging doors, finish work, and cabinetry.
• Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair district irrigation pumps and systems.
• Perform pruning of shrubbery and trees.
• Participate in weed control activities.
• Operate and maintain maintenance/grounds equipment, including lifts, mowers, snow plows, tractors, and other miscellaneous equipment.
• Operate snow removal equipment during winter months.
• Work various shifts or hours as needed to complete assigned tasks, including snow removal, irrigation, and emergency response.
• Perform sanitary, custodial, and housekeeping tasks as required.
• Work independently when necessary.
• Take direction, follow instructions, and maintain reliable attendance and punctuality.
• Exhibit the ability, attitude, and appearance necessary to work effectively in a public school environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

• Knowledge and skills necessary to perform various electrical, plumbing, carpentry, grounds care, and general maintenance tasks, as well as operate equipment used to maintain lawns and building facilities.
• Experience or demonstrated knowledge of irrigation systems, irrigation pumps, controllers, troubleshooting, or seasonal irrigation maintenance is preferred.
• Willingness to accept direction from the Maintenance/Custodial Director and Grounds Foreman and perform assigned duties with minimal supervision.
• Ability to interact positively and confidently with students, staff, and the general public.
• Ability to remain flexible under changing needs and circumstances and effectively communicate and cooperate with custodial personnel and building staff to meet needs and accomplish work-related tasks.
• Must be physically able to climb ladders, including step ladders and extension ladders to a height of 40 feet, or use district lifts.
• Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to personally provide appropriate footwear, clothing, and foul-weather gear.
• Model appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information consistent with District ethical guidelines.
• Must have excellent moral character and be able to work effectively with children and adults.
• Must maintain a neat and clean personal appearance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Licenses and Other Requirements

• Must hold or be willing to obtain a Washington State Public Applicator license.
• Successful completion of WSP and FBI fingerprint/background check and pre-employment drug test.
• Valid Washington State Driver's License and proof of a safe driving record demonstrated by a current five-year driving abstract.
• Completion, submission, and positive results from Washington State Sexual Misconduct Disclosure requirements.
• Authorization and Release of Information form relating to prior employment.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Working Conditions

Hours may vary depending on District needs. Requires sitting, turning, lifting, pulling, and pushing objects using proper lifting, pulling, and pushing techniques, including lifting 50 pounds from floor to chest. Must be able to use fingers, hands, arms, legs, vision, and hearing and sit or stand for prolonged periods of time. Routinely requires dexterity and balance.

Requires driving in normal and adverse weather conditions and may be exposed to inclement weather. May be required to drive in congested areas for extended periods. Must be able to bend, stretch, twist, walk, reach, carry, push, stoop, crouch, and hear. Requires far and near visual acuity and depth perception.

Requires mental concentration under various traffic and road conditions, including parking lot snow removal. Requires occasional evening and weekend work. Exposures may include dust, fumes, infectious diseases, occasional noise, and various road and traffic conditions.

Conditions of Employment

The current opening is a classified, represented position for a total of 40 hours per week, year-round, with holidays, vacation, sick leave, and salary in accordance with the Ellensburg School District Public School Employee Agreement.
