Job summary

KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools is seeking a Part-Time Elementary Recess Aide to supervise elementary students during recess, either outdoors or indoors, with hours typically from mid-morning to afternoon. Prior experience with children in school or childcare settings is preferred, and a focus on safety and positive behavior is essential.

Qualifications

  • Recess Aide must supervise elementary students during outdoor (or indoor) recess.
  • Experience supporting children in school, childcare, or enrichment settings is preferred.
  • Must complete all required background checks (PA State Police and PA Child Abuse Clearance).

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality supervision of children during recess and ensure a safe, joyful experience.
  • Give clear directions and uphold schoolwide behavior expectations.
  • Redirect students positively to meet behavior standards and stay on track.
  • Facilitate games and activities while maintaining supervision of the group.
  • Ensure a bully-free recess and communicate with staff about any concerns.
  • Assist with setting up and tidying play areas after recess.
  • Collaborate with Principal and school team as assigned.

Role Overview

Recess Aides primarily provide general supervision of elementary‑aged children during outdoor (or indoor) recess, helping to ensure that recess is a safe, joyful experience for students. Candidates for this position should enjoy engaging with children and have some experience supporting children in school, after/before school, summer camp, and/or daycare settings. Recess Monitor must be all weekdays; hours vary a bit by school, but typically include mid‑morning to afternoon hours (10:00 am‑2:00 pm or 11:00 am‑3:00 pm).

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide quality supervision of children, including but not limited to:
  • Providing children with clear directions and expectations, upholding and reinforcing schoolwide behavior systems.
  • Positively redirecting students who are struggling to meet behavior expectations to get them back on track quickly.
  • Creating opportunities for collaborative play (organizing or facilitating games, suggesting activities, etc.) while maintaining supervision of the whole group.
  • Ensuring children are able to enjoy a recess free from bullying.
  • Communicating with school‑based staff regarding any student concerns or recess needs.
  • Bringing out play equipment and ensuring the play yard is tidied up after recess.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned by the School Principal.
  • Love and see the high potential of all children.
  • Experience working with children in school, childcare, or enrichment settings.
  • Ability to quickly build relationships and rapport with children and uphold high expectations in a warm but clear and direct manner.
  • Flexible, team‑player committed to ensuring a positive, joyful experience for students.
  • Complete all required criminal and child abuse background checks: PA State Police Clearance and PA Child Abuse Clearance.

Compensation

Recess Aides are compensated at $15.00 – $18.00 per hour, commensurate upon experience, typically work (20) hours/week.
