Job Description: Special Education Teacher

Salary Schedule: Certified Teacher Schedule

Department: Special Services

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

This position is for a candidate interested in working with and providing instruction to students with disabilities in a Special Education or General Education setting. The candidate must understand a wide range of disabilities, including but not limited to, Learning Disability, Intellectual Disability, Emotional Disturbance, Other Health Impairment, Hard of Hearing/Deaf, and Visual Impairment. Knowledge and/or experience with Behavior Modification Strategies, I.D.E.A., and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support are required. Compliance, confidentiality, and communication are essential characteristics for this role.

Qualifications
  • Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from a four-year college or university
  • Special Education teaching certificate; Mild/Moderate and/or Severe/Profound Certificate
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials; provide individualized and small group instruction tailored to students' IEPs.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to foster a functional learning environment.
  • Evaluate students' academic and social progress; keep records and prepare reports per IEP and district requirements.
  • Communicate with parents through IEP conferences and other means regarding student progress.
  • Maintain professional competence through district-provided in-service education and self-directed professional growth activities.
  • Supervise students during out-of-classroom activities.
  • Participate in faculty committees and student activities.
  • Complete all required paperwork promptly to meet federal compliance deadlines.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to provide appropriate accommodations for students on IEPs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities

Ability to read and understand instructions, correspondence, and memos; write grammatically correct communication.

Problem-solving skills; interpret various instructions and diagrams.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to use hands, reach, talk, hear, stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must be able to lift/move up to 100 pounds and have suitable vision capabilities.

Work Environment

Exposure to airborne particles, outdoor weather, mechanical parts, and variable noise levels. Accommodations available for disabilities. Work location may vary in response to health or safety needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May supervise staff or students as needed.
