Akima Systems Engineering (ASE) is looking a 1st Class Marine Electrician to work in Suffolk, Virginia

Responsibilities

  • Marine Electricians install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for a variety of purposes, including interior communications.
  • As a Marine Electrician, you will be essential in maintaining and repairing electrical systems on marine vessels.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining electronic equipment on board vessels and in shipyard facilities.
  • Marine Electrician applies advanced technical knowledge to solve complex problems that typically cannot be solved solely by referencing manufacturers' manuals or similar documents.
  • Examples of such problems include determining the location and density of circuitry, evaluating electromagnetic radiation, isolating malfunctions, and incorporating engineering; changes.
  • Work typically requires an understanding of the interrelationships of circuits, exercising independent judgment in performing such tasks as making circuit analyses, calculating wave forms, and tracing relationships in signal flow, using complex test instruments such as high frequency pulse generators, frequency synthesizers, distortion analyzers, and complex computer control equipment.
  • Work may be reviewed by supervisor for general compliance with accepted practices. This position may provide technical guidance to lower level technicians.
  • Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement, and performance consistent with company values.
  • Under guidance, install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify equipment and structures by performing alterations and installations for fleet modernization on US Navy surface ships.
  • Perform all duties required to layout, fabricate, and install electrical wiring, coaxial cable, or fiber optic onboard Navy vessels.
  • Read and interpret schematics and blueprints. Work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, work orders, technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical equipment and cables. Assist with troubleshooting and diagnosing equipment to efficiently eliminate problems.
  • Perform removal and installation of cables found overhead, along bulkheads, or under the deck.
  • Repair and replace cables/connectors.
  • Apply understanding of production processes towards completion of complicated and non-routine tasks related to installations on shipboard systems and related equipment at company, and/or field locations in accordance with established quality and safety procedures.
  • May inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.
  • Maintain effective supervisor and manager communications and relations.
  • Remove, plan, execute, install, and modify electrical cable, cableways, conductors, connectors, strain relief, fasteners, and equipment aboard naval vessels.
  • Complete electrical and data conductor disconnections and reconnections on existing and new equipment for a complete installation.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must possess a high school diploma, GED or industrial/trade school certificate.
  • Minimum of five to seven years of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment on-board Navy vessels, U.S. Coast Guard vessels; MSC or Maritime vessels, and practical shipboard experience with HM&E systems and equipment.
  • Past supervisory experience is a plus.
  • Must be familiar with Interior Communications (IC) systems.
  • Must be a US citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check
  • Must be able to access government installations by obtaining and maintaining a Biometric Defense Identification System (DBIS) credential to perform work on-board US Naval vessels or government assigned work.
  • Must be able to work overtime and weekends upon managerial request.
  • Must be able to travel outside the Suffolk, Virginia area, if required.
  • Must have prior experience working with Fiber Optic cables and multi-pin connectors.
  • Must possess or provide trade specific hand tools.
  • Must have experience working in a team environment and be able to communicate effectively with others.
  • Must have understanding and ability to accomplish NSI 009-73 requirements:
    • Inspection, testing, installation, removal, and repair of shipboard electrical cabling and electronic equipment.
    • Cable installations including banding, terminal boxes, connection boxes, connectors, equipment, penetrations, cableways, hangers and associated components
    • MCT, MCP, and Stuffing Tube opening, packing, closing and testing
    • Bonding and Grounding of Electrical Equipment
    • NSI 009-25 - Air testing of penetrations
    • Electrical troubleshooting and testing, using multimeters, and megohmmeters
  • Must have experience assisting with troubleshooting, maintaining, installing, and repairing electrical distribution systems and its associated equipment and cabling.
  • Must have experience with cable removal and installation including the proper methods of opening and securing various types of cable penetrations.
  • Must be able to work under instruction removing, installing, and modifying electrical cable, cableways, conductors, connectors, strain relief, fasteners, cable penetrations and equipment aboard naval vessels.
  • Must be familiar with reading electrical drawings and schematics.
  • Must be familiar with the proper and safe usage of multimeters and meggers.
  • Must be familiar with NAVSEA Standard items.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates with current NAVSEA Multipin Connector Certifications (NSI 009-73) are highly preferred.
  • Candidates with current NAVSEA Fiber Optic certification (NSI 009-123) are preferred.
  • Candidates with NAVSEA Cableway Improvement Program certifications are preferred.
  • Candidates who have graduated from and/or completed a vocational school or a skilled trades certificate program are preferred.
  • Candidates with a current or active DoD Secret clearance preferred.
  • OSHA 10 Maritime Certification a plus.
  • Microsoft Office knowledge is a plus.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes.
  • The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs.
  • Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
  • May require wearing a respirator.
  • Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
