Akima Systems Engineering (ASE) is seeking a 1st Class Marine Electrician to work in Suffolk, Virginia.
Responsibilities
- Install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems on marine vessels, including interior communications.
- Maintain and repair electrical systems on vessels, troubleshooting electronic equipment onboard and in shipyard facilities.
- Apply advanced technical knowledge to solve complex electrical problems beyond basic manuals.
- Work involves understanding circuit relationships, using complex test instruments, and performing circuit analyses.
- Provide technical guidance to lower-level technicians and ensure work quality, safety, and compliance.
- Assist in installing, operating, maintaining, repairing, and modifying electrical equipment and structures on US Navy ships.
- Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, technical documents, and work orders.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical equipment and cables, including overhead, bulkhead, and deck installations.
- Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.
- Maintain effective communication with supervisors and managers.
- Perform disconnections and reconnections of electrical and data conductors during installations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or trade school certificate required.
- 5-7 years of experience in electrical systems maintenance and repair on Navy, Coast Guard, or maritime vessels.
- Experience with HM&E systems and shipboard electrical work preferred.
- Familiarity with Interior Communications (IC) systems and ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance.
- Must pass drug test, background check, and obtain a Biometric Defense ID for access to government installations.
- Willingness to work overtime, weekends, travel, and possess or provide trade tools.
- Experience with fiber optic cables, multi-pin connectors, and reading electrical schematics.
- Knowledge of NSI 009-73 requirements and electrical troubleshooting tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current NAVSEA certifications (NSI 009-73, NSI 009-123, Cableway Improvement Program).
- Vocational or skilled trades certification and active DoD Secret clearance preferred.
- OSHA 10 Maritime Certification and Microsoft Office skills are a plus.
Physical Demands
- Lift and transport heavy equipment (minimum 30 lbs).
- Work in extreme temperatures, confined spaces, aboard ships, and climb ladders.
- Perform duties in high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions, including working aloft or over vessel sides.
- Travel and possibly wear respirators may be required.
