Lead Mechanic - Marine Electrician (2nd Shift)

Purpose

Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a Lead Mechanic-Marine Electrician to support 2nd shift operations in our Shipyard in Norfolk, VA.

Job Description

  • Perform work requiring a thorough knowledge of electrical theory and principles, statutory codes, properties of materials and principles of operation of electrical equipment under direction of supervisor.
  • Ensure compliance of OSHA, USCG, ABS, U.S. Navy and company safety requirements concerning work assignments
  • Prepare and install equipment or system alterations in accordance with the technical specifications.
  • Maintain and repair electrical and electro-mechanical systems of ferries, dredges, and all other marine vessels.
  • Lay out, assemble, install, and maintain pipe systems, pipe supports, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, and lubricating for industrial production and processing systems.
  • Select type and size of pipe, and related materials and equipment, such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders, according to specifications.
  • Disconnect and reconnect motors and electrical equipment.
  • Adjust/align or replace components of motors, generators, and alternators such as bearings, centrifugal switches, brushes, diodes, etc.
  • Identify various cables by cable types, number of conductors and wire size.
  • Plan, install or repair to avoid obstructions and avoid interfering with activities of other workers.
  • Install and maintain refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, including compressors, pumps, meters, pneumatic and hydraulic controls, and piping, using hand tools and power tools and following specifications and blueprints.
  • Increase pressure in pipe system and observe connected pressure gauge to test system for leaks.
  • Regularly inspect all pipes and detect malfunctions and damages if any.
  • Report all damages, issues and other matters relating to the pipe systems to the supervising authority.
  • Understand and act upon instruction / work independently to complete responsibilities.

Additionally, The Position Will

  • Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies, including conducting pre-operation inspections and following proper lockout/tagout procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Select and manage appropriate electrical materials, tools, and equipment for specific tasks, ensuring they are in good working order and suitable for the job.
  • Maintain accurate records of all electrical work performed, including materials used, time spent, and compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with other tradespeople and departments to complete projects within specified timelines.
  • Effectively manage multiple projects concurrently, demonstrating the ability to prioritize tasks and responsibilities successfully.
  • Lead department employees and other assigned crew members, providing support and training as needed.

Qualifications

  • Must have at least seven (7) years of related trade experience (electrical).
  • Must have a valid driver license.
  • Must have knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with trade.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others.
  • Must be able to enter and move through manholes to reach and work internally confined spaces.
  • Must be a steady, reliable worker.
  • Must be able to comprehend and follow instructions.
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance.

Desired Qualifications

  • Some previous supervisory/mentoring experience (such as make-up supervisor).
  • Prefer previous experience as a marine electrician and/or pipefitter.

Security Requirements

  • Must be able to access government facilities and be DBIDS eligible.
  • Position requires you to obtain and maintain a DBIDS.
  • Position requires US Citizenship.

Travel Requirements

  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
