  • Identify reference lines and mark center, buttock, and frame lines.
  • Position parts in hull with assistance, align with jacks, turnbuckles, and wedges.
  • Drill hole locations and install temporary fasteners for welding or riveting.
  • Use shop machinery to roll, bend, flange, cut and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts.
  • Safely use hand, power, and cutting tools.

Job description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This positionis responsible forthe following: Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Must have a basic understanding of mathematics and be able to perform operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, as well as work fractions.

  1. Ability to interpret blueprints and performlay outsand fabricate metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, andbracesthem in position within hull of ship for riveting or welding.

  1. Quality Control: before using verify material compatibility with specifications.

  1. Lays out position of parts on metal, working from blueprints or templates and using scribe and hand tools.

  1. Locates and marks reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines.

  1. Positions parts in hull of ship,assistedby Rigger.

  1. Alignparts in relation to each other, using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.

  1. Marks location of holes to be drilled and installs temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding or riveting.

  1. Install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips.

  1. May prepare molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts.

  1. Remove high spots and cut bevels, using hand files, portablegrindersand cutting torches.

  1. May tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.

  1. May roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts, using shop machinery, such as plate rolls, presses, bending brakes, and joggle machines.

  1. Safely and efficiently use various hand,powerand cuttingtools.

  1. Be able to use large machinery such asa metalshear, metalbrakeand band saw.

Required Education & Experience:

  1. High School Diploma and/or one year certificate from college or technical school preferred.

  1. Must be able to pass a hands-on test when applicableand/or marine/industrialplate/structural fitting experience:

  • 1stClass:3-5 years

  • 2ndClass:1-3 years
