Job Description
Uncommon Special Education teachers are passionate about developing and monitoring accommodations for students with special needs. They advocate for students and believe that specialized instruction and related services increase academic achievement. Teachers provide academic, emotional, and physical support while maintaining high expectations.

The 15:1 teacher is responsible for:

  • Create and modify curriculum aligned with NY State Regents standards to prepare students for exams.
  • Design and adapt lesson plans in English, Math, Science, and History to meet diverse student needs.
  • Implement lessons to prepare students for NY State Regents exams.
  • Align lesson plans and strategies with students’ IEP goals.
  • Create modified assessments aligned with NY State Regents exams.
  • Analyze assessment data to assess mastery and identify reteaching needs.
  • Collaborate with families and Special Education teams to develop 504 plans and IEPs with appropriate accommodations.
  • Create an inclusive, safe environment fostering student growth.

Special Education Specific Responsibilities

  • Work with school leaders and families to analyze student work and assessments, ensuring IEP compliance.
  • Manage a caseload of IEPs, including data collection, writing IEPs, and participating in meetings.
  • Employ various instructional strategies, including small group and one-on-one instruction, to differentiate learning.

School Culture

  • Build positive relationships with students to foster support and engagement.
  • Partner with families to provide resources supporting learning needs.
  • Participate in professional development, clinics, and coaching.
  • Attend weekly meetings to build community, uphold core values, and promote achievement.
  • Collaborate with grade-level and 15:1 teams on goals and instructional strategies.

Required Experience

  • Interest in impacting K-12 students in urban communities; 3-5 years preferred.
  • Expertise in Special Education, Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, or related fields.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Special Education Certification (7-12 or K-12) preferred.
  • Certification not required to hire but must meet NY certification eligibility; must enroll in a teacher prep program and maintain a GPA of 2.5+ if without an education degree.
  • Must earn certification within 3 years of employment.

Additional Information
