Job description

Position Summary

12‑Month Custodian at Teche Elementary (Job ID: 2805). The position provides 8‑hour shifts, 5 days a week, with shifts that may start as early as 5:30‑6:00 a.m. and may extend into evenings, nights, holidays and after‑school activities. The Custodian maintains an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff and the public, prepares equipment and furniture for meetings, classroom activities and events, and minimizes property damage, loss and liability exposure to the school district.

Key Requirements and Qualifications
  • Certification: Not applicable; must meet all district employment requirements and passed a physical examination.
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience: Prior custodial or maintenance experience preferred but not required.
  • Content Knowledge: Basic understanding of cleaning procedures, sanitation standards and safe use of custodial equipment and supplies.
  • Skills: Ability to follow written instructions and schedules; ability to follow directions and work effectively with others; strong attention to detail; ability to maintain a clean, safe and orderly environment; ability to arrange furniture and equipment for school activities and events; and commitment to minimizing property damage, loss and safety risks.
Role and Responsibilities
  1. Perform all activities that are custodial in nature and deemed appropriate by Administration.
  2. Arrange furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparation for meetings, classroom activities, and events.
  3. Attend district in‑service training(s) for information on new and/or improved procedures.
  4. Clean assigned school district facilities (e.g., classrooms, offices, gyms, multipurpose rooms, grounds, playgrounds, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, safe, attractive environment.
  5. Assist in maintaining seasonal grounds work (lawn).
  6. Deliver various items (e.g., supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) for distribution to appropriate places.
  7. Help to respond to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (opening and closing of buildings, providing additional security during school‑sponsored events, responding to alarms, etc.) to resolve safety issues and maintain a functioning educational environment.
  8. Inspect school facilities to ensure safe operations, maintain attractiveness and cleanliness, and identify necessary repairs.
  9. Lift up to 30 pounds unassisted as required.
  10. Perform work at heights up to 12 feet using ladders or scaffolding for cleaning, light replacement, tile replacement, etc.
  11. Prepare school facilities for daily operations (open gates, disarm security systems, turn on lights, raise flags, place crosswalk signs, perform minor repairs, lock doors, etc.).
  12. Secure school facilities and grounds to minimize damage, equipment loss, and liability.
  13. Service job‑related machinery/equipment (vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, buffers, etc.) and replace brushes, pads, rollers, as needed.
  14. Perform hurricane preparation (secure sandbags, playground equipment) and cleanup (remove sandbags, debris).
  15. Assist with simple preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment.
  16. Assist the Special Education department with evacuating special education students from emergency situations.
Essential Physical Requirements

The Custodian must be able to stand or walk for extended periods, lift and carry items up to 75 lbs, work at heights up to 12 feet, use ladders and scaffolds, push and pull heavy equipment, and perform repetitive motions such as mopping, sweeping and operating cleaning machinery. The role requires coordination of multiple tasks, ability to work quickly under time pressure, response to emergencies, and maintaining vigilance throughout the day.

Working Conditions

Work occurs indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. The Custodian is exposed to chemical fumes (cleaning and sanitizing agents), noise from equipment, vibration from lawn mowers and other machinery, and occasional slips, trips or falls. Protective equipment such as gloves, masks, safety glasses, and proper footwear are used as required.

Professional Responsibilities

The Custodian maintains a professional appearance, attends work regularly and on time, completes work efficiently and accurately, follows confidentiality and supervisory guidelines, supports district initiatives, reports progress to supervisors, and adheres to all district policies and regulations. The Custodian serves as an ambassador for the St. Martin Parish School Board and provides exemplary customer service to students, staff and visitors.
