General Description

The criteria indicated below are intended to describe various types of work that may be performed. The exclusion of specific responsibilities does not prohibit them if the work is similar, related, or a logical task of the position.

Instruction & Curriculum Implementation

  • Develop and implement differentiated lesson plans tailored to individual student needs and aligned with district and state standards.
  • Utilize evidence-based instructional strategies and integrate technology and assistive tools to support learning.
  • Modify and adapt general education curricula and materials to meet the specific requirements of IEPs.
  • Integrate life skills, social-emotional learning, and functional academics into daily instruction to promote student success.

IEP Development & Compliance

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) collaboratively with families, related service providers, and general education staff.
  • Collect and maintain data on student progress, ensuring accurate records and using data to inform instructional decisions.
  • Collaborate regularly with parents, seeking their input and addressing concerns regarding student progress.
  • Facilitate IEP meetings, clearly communicating goals, accommodations, and services to all participants.
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal special education regulations, including IDEA and Section 504.

Classroom & Behavior Management

  • Maintain a structured, safe, and positive learning environment that fosters respect and encourages student participation.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and use positive reinforcement strategies to support student behavior.
  • Employ proactive classroom management strategies, including clear expectations, routines, and relationship-building.
  • Collaborate with support staff, including paraprofessionals, to ensure consistency in behavioral support and implementation of BIPs.
  • Utilize crisis intervention strategies, such as NCVI, to manage challenging behaviors and ensure safety.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, and administrators to support inclusive practices and student success.
  • Communicate regularly with families, providing updates on student progress, strategies for home support, and seeking their input.
  • Participate actively in professional development opportunities, staff meetings, and district training.
  • Provide leadership, training, and mentorship to paraprofessionals working within the classroom.

Assessment & Progress Monitoring

  • Conduct ongoing assessments, including formative and summative, to inform instruction and monitor student growth toward IEP goals.
  • Use data from assessments to adjust instructional strategies and interventions, ensuring individualized support for students.
  • Prepare and submit required reports, documentation, and progress updates in strict compliance with district, state, and federal regulations.

Qualifications

  • Illinois Professional Educator License
  • Required - Endorsements in LBS1
  • The employee must have foundational knowledge of district curricular standards and targets, State of Illinois learning standards, best practices in teaching, differentiated instruction, successful classroom management strategies, and other related curriculum objectives.

Evaluation

  • Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Teacher Evaluation Plan.
  • Knowledge of instructional strategies for students with diverse learning needs, including those with autism, intellectual challenges, emotional regulation needs, and complex learning profiles.
  • Familiarity with IEP development, accommodations/modifications, and special education laws.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee is frequently required to use their hands to handle or feel instructional materials and classroom tools. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Completion of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCVI) training and de-escalation strategies is required. The district will provide training to ensure staff are equipped with proactive behavior management, crisis prevention, and intervention techniques to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment. Ongoing refresher training may be required to maintain certification and stay updated on best practices.

Work Environment

The employee shall possess personal computing skills with the following types of software: web browsers, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and student database systems. The employee shall use board-approved resources, classroom textbooks, teacher manuals, technology, and assistive technology. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in a classroom setting with children, occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions, and is subject to noises associated with an educational environment.

Working Conditions

Salary: Per the NSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement for the 2025-26 school year, excellent benefits, TRS Retirement Pension Service Credit, paid sick, personal, bereavement leave, and other benefits.
