Job summary

Banking Computer Services Private Limited is seeking a Senior Unix Engineer to manage and optimize the Unix environment across production, DR, and test systems supporting critical online payment services.

The role requires strong Solaris/Linux administration, OS hardening, and 24/7 on-call support. You will lead incident resolution, change management, and infrastructure documentation to ensure reliability and security.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in IT/CS/IS or related field.
• Minimum 8 years of experience in system administration and support in Middleware, Unix and Linux systems.
• Experience with SAN for Unix and Linux platforms.
• Experience in OS hardening and patching.
• Proficiency in enterprise backup, monitoring, and management software.
• Strong communication across organizational levels and on-call readiness.

Responsibilities

• Perform system administration and maintenance in production, DR, and test environments (Solaris and Linux).

• Monitor obsolescence and renew passwords and certificates.
• Develop disaster recovery plans and conduct DR testing and failover exercises.

Team and Position Summary

The Technology Division at BCS is responsible for the operations, maintenance, and support of BCS applications such as FAST, Giro, CTS, PayNow, SGQR, TFR, eGIRO and its critical infrastructure, ensuring its operational stability, regulatory compliance, and service reliability.

The Infrastructure Services Team under Technology ensures the resilience, security, and high-performance of BCS’ technology infrastructure across various functions of service monitoring, incident management, and technical support. The team ensures seamless operation, maintenance, and strategic growth of core infrastructure components, including networks, servers, storage, middleware, and databases.

The Senior Unix Engineer is responsible for managing and maintaining the Unix environment, ensuring its continuous availability and optimal performance in production systems that support BCS’ critical online payment services.

Key Responsibilities

System Administration

• Perform system administration and maintenance in a heterogeneous environment (production, DR, test) comprising of Sun Solaris servers and Linux-based servers
• Perform system upgrade and enhancement on IT infrastructure components
• Implement operating system and product-specific security hardening and patches
• Monitor obsolescence of IT infrastructure components (systems)
• Monitor expiry and perform renewal of system passwords and certificates
• Implement a schedule of system backups and database archive operations to ensure data recoverability and business continuity
• Develop and implement disaster recovery plans for IT infrastructure (systems) and conduct regular disaster recovery testing and component switchover exercises to ensure usability of standby and DR equipment
• Manage the application User Acceptance Test (UAT) and upkeep the use of UAT environment
• Document middleware platforms and related infrastructure as directed with respect to functionality, maintenance, and administration.
• Provides technical support and guidance (level 3) to end-users, and other IT resources.

Incident and Problem Management

• Provide second level system support and resolve incidents and problems in accordance to established Service Level Agreement (SLA)
• Perform problem diagnosis on incidents and propose and implement measures to prevent recurrence

Change and Release Management

• Schedule and release system changes to production environment in accordance with the change management process / procedures
• Create deployment packages for application changes using the application deployment tool

Configuration Management

• Develop and maintain a comprehensive operating system hardware and software configuration database / library of all IT infrastructure components used in the production environment

Capacity and Performance Management

• Perform infrastructure capacity monitoring and planning
• Monitor and perform performance tuning to optimize system performance

Process Management

• Devise and implement the underlying processes supporting IT service management, in conformance to corporate security policies and guidelines

Project Management and Support

• Provide systems support to projects in accordance with the project timeline
• Manage infrastructure enhancement in accordance with established guidelines

Documentation

• Develop and maintain technical and process documents to upkeep IT infrastructure

Requirements

Education and Qualification

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field
• Minimum 8 years of experience in system administration and support in Middleware, Unix and Linux systems

Skills and Knowledge

• Experience in working with SAN for Unix and Linux Platforms
• Experience in performing OS hardening and patching
• Experience with enterprise backup and system monitoring and management software
• Proficient in scripting for Unix and Linux-based environments to automate tasks
• Familiar with database administration and data centre operations will be an advantage
• Provide 24/7 support on a rostered basis
• Provide weekend and after office hours support for change implementation (for critical production services)
