Job summary

Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking a Staff, Systems Design - System Architect to lead firmware and low-level embedded software for advanced scientific instruments. You will shape architecture for controllers, sensors, and electromechanical subsystems, and mentor engineers across multiple teams.

Qualifications

Advanced degree plus 6 years of firmware/embedded experience or Bachelor’s with 8 years.
Bachelor’s or higher in Computer/Electrical Engineering or related field.
Experience architecting and delivering firmware for complex embedded products with controllers and electronics.
Strong C/C++ proficiency for firmware and embedded systems.
Experience with microcontrollers, RTOS, bare-metal, or similar platforms.
Knowledge of real-time software design, timing, and memory constraints.
Experience with device drivers, BSPs, HALs, bootloaders, and hardware interfaces.
Experience with debugging hardware-connected software using JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers.
Experience with version control, CI, automated tests, and release management.

Responsibilities

Lead firmware architecture and design for instrument controllers and electro-mechanical subsystems.
Define hardware abstraction, firmware boundaries, interfaces, RTOS behavior, and controller communication.
Translate system requirements into firmware specs, architecture docs, and implementation plans.
Architect firmware for motion control, sensors, actuators, fluidics, thermal control, optics, diagnostics, safety, and error recovery.
Establish reusable firmware platforms, coding standards, and review practices.
Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, systems, and embedded software teams through bring-up, verification, and sustaining support.
Lead root-cause analysis for firmware, electronics, timing, and field issues.
Define verification strategies including unit, integration, HIL, and fault-injection testing.
Guide board bring-up, firmware debugging, and performance optimization.
Mentor firmware engineers and influence platform roadmaps and tooling.
