Job summary

Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking a Staff, Systems Design – System Architect to provide technical architecture and leadership for firmware and embedded software across advanced instruments and automation platforms.

You will define firmware architecture for real-time control of motors, sensors, optics, and thermal systems, collaborating with electrical, mechanical, and software teams to deliver robust, testable solutions that meet safety and reliability goals.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree in engineering required or equivalent experience.
• 6+ years in firmware/embedded system development.
• Experience delivering firmware for complex electro-mechanical products.
• Strong knowledge of real-time software design and hardware interfaces.

Responsibilities

• Lead firmware architecture for instrument controllers and subsystems.
• Define hardware abstraction and interfaces between firmware and higher-level software.
• Translate product requirements into firmware specifications and tests.
• Architect firmware for motion control, sensing, and thermal systems.
• Establish reusable firmware platforms and coding standards across products.
• Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, systems, and software teams during bring-up and verification.
• Lead root-cause analysis for firmware, timing, and reliability issues.
• Define verification strategies: unit, integration, hardware-in-the-loop tests.
• Mentor engineers and influence firmware platform roadmaps.
